A Quick Chat with Mum Thinks Blue

What was your favourite part of creating your new single "Side That Wasn't Told'?

Joseph - definitely adding the little bass/sax fill after the breakdown, it’s such a fulfilling fill and we had the absolute pleasure of working with Lucinda from Forest Range in Adelaide and she was so patient and supportive while everything fell into place!

Hannah - I have to agree with Joseph on this one! Getting the creative juices flowing and being free to play whatever you wish is the best. The song definitely came out 110% after recording with Lucinda.

Austin - I really enjoyed writing the lyrics, and the process I went through sculpting them from the story they originate from. I always enjoy writing and often write from the heart so it was good to see it all come together with the song. I also really enjoyed layering harmonies in the recording process, as mentioned, recording was a blast!

Josh - I forgot the stand for my tom so ended up having to only use one tom which forced me to be a bit more creative with my fills. And after being sick we did one more take of the fill and that ended up being the one we used. Lucinda really squeezed that one out of me.

Joaquin - Probably adding the synthy fills in the second verse. Definitely took a few too many takes fill of weird sounds but eventually found something groovy enough to boogie!

What's the story behind your name Mum Thinks Blue?

Hannah - One day I was on a road trip with my family and that day we happened to be trying to decide a name for our band. My mum loves the 80s Scottish band Deacon Blue, which I think is what possessed her to be so determined on us calling ourselves ‘Blue’. The whole car ride she just kept saying “call yourselves blue, do it” and after a while my dad said “why don’t you just call yourselves ‘Mum Thinks Blue?” Alas, the band name was created.

Joseph - see above

Austin- this is a Hannah story

Josh - Ditto

Joaquin - As per previous responses

What's your creative process like when making music together?

Joseph - it’s great! Super easy to refine ideas when 5 people can chip away at it, everyone is super easy to work with because we all have the same goal! Serve the song!

Hannah - lovely! Everyone comes up with fun ideas and we all like to add our own flavour into the song writing process.

Austin - We all have a lot to add, so many ideas flowing in the room when we get together. It’s always a really good feeling when someone comes up with a riff/ melody and we all just come in and build to it. It’s a super powerful feeling starting with nothing and having it turn into a full song idea.

Josh - Sometimes we have completed demos that each of us bring to the rest of the band, sometimes it’s just a little riff but then we try to work it out together and all add our own spin on it.

Joaquin - Most the time its like “ hey, heres some weird riff thinge i wrote, what u reckon”  “heck yeah, I like it, we should jam it”. Then we start to layer our own ideas in and most if the time the idea will tell you what it wants.

If you were an instrument, which one would you be and why?

Joseph - would definitely be the Casio PT-50, surprised I’m not if I’m being honest

Hannah - I would be Dale from ‘Step Brothers’ drum kit, iconic forever.

Austin - I feel like I would be an organ because they’re presence is powerful hehe. I also love the sound of them

Josh - I feel like I would be a french horn because then Hans Zimmer would love me.

Joaquin - a kazoo that is slightly too quiet, makes weird noises, confuses many

What are your favourite colours, and why?

Joseph - hard toss up between Red and Joshes eyes

Hannah - orange because it’s fun and smells like citrus.

Austin - Blue of course!! Na to be honest, probably light Green (has to be light green) or Red, just makes me feel happy.

Josh - I would say green as its the same colour as spinach.

Joaquin - can’t go wrong with a good red.

What was the first concert you ever went to?

Joseph - green day baby!

Hannah - … Reece Mastin with my dad 🥲

Austin - Xavier Rudd, one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen still to this day!

Josh - ACDC tribute band at the marion cultural center with my dad

Josh - Id have to say MurMurMur or Gang of Youths

Go-to Halloween costume?

Joseph- can’t get me away from a sexy Batman costume just makes me feel like Robert Pattinson

Hannah - Anything as long as it’s not as revealing as Joe’s Batman costume from last year’s party.

Austin - Easy, Austin “Danger” Powers baby

Josh - Fred from scooby doo

Joaquin - a ghost :))

What is your favourite part of performing?

Joseph - getting everyone all riled up and excited! That’s what live music is all about and I think it’s what we do best! Get in the crowd and get versatile!

Hannah - seeing people sing and dance to our songs!! There is nothing more exhilarating than playing to a crowd that is loving your own stuff!!

Austin - That moment of just walking up on stage, seeing everyone and playing that first song. I absolutely love when people get into it, which is (as mentioned) a huge part of our show, we love getting everyone fired up and involved. I love when people sing the songs back and just the connection between the band and audience.

Josh - If people know the words to a song, hearing them sing them back. Thats quite cool.

Joaquin - completely forgetting my solo parts and trusting the sacred pentatonic scales to carry me to the promised land.

What’s next for Mum Thinks Blue?

Joseph - what isn’t!

Hannah - more music and more interstate shows!! Also what Joseph said!!

Austin - We’re still slowly chipping away at World domination. In the meantime, a heap of releases and some tasty gigs

Josh - Lots of exciting gigs coming up and lots of demoing and recording new songs.
