A Quick Chat with Nathan Cavaleri
Can you tell us a bit about your new tour?
The “Miracles” album tour will be the biggest tour I’ve taken on since I was a kid. It’s been a very profound and life changing journey getting back up on stage - One that is reflected in various ways throughout the album and in the stage show. The set itself contains songs from my previous album “Demons” as well as “Miracles” and is strung together with life experiences of various themes. From growing up playing on the big stages with B.B.King and MJ to how mental health challenges ultimately woke me up. Some songs are deep but some songs bang along on the surface. Definitely triggers a smorgasbord of emotions.
What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?
I’m influenced by my own personal experiences as well as those that I’ve observed. I draw on my subconscious record collection to create a feeling a vibe that aligns with the sentiment of the song. Sometimes it can start with a riff and inspire a theme or sometimes it can be the other way around. The artists that seem to have found their way into my head throughout “Miracles” were Queens of The Stoneage, Tame Impala, Lana Del Ray, David Bowie, J.J.Cale, TRex, Angus & Julia Stone, Andy Shauf and of course Dire Straits. Grizzly Bear found their way amongst it too!
What’s the creative process like for you?
It’s a big lesson in self trust and therefore can involve a lot of self torture. The goal is always getting to truth which is the space in which I need to create. If it’s not true, it won’t fly! Sometimes I have to dig deep and other times it’s available on cue. Streaming the whole creation experience on Twitch definitely helped to keep me focused too!
If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?
The constant complaining, negativity, judgment and skepticism (I say with complete judgement haha) but in all honesty, I’d love to see a little more optimism, appreciation and compassion - Compassion especially to those who have messed up. It’s a hell of a time to be an artist and whilst I’m totally up for addressing challenges in an attempt to make things better, I feel like it should come from a place of appreciation for what we have! On a different note, access to good healthy food would be good too!
What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?
More psych fees. Probably onto marriage 4 by now!
Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with? Why?
KEV PARKER! As a self-produced artist, he inspires me massively! I’d even just love to have a convesation with him TBH. I love how innovative he is and just seems like a mad hang too!
What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?
Know what you want and why you want it. Hold onto that knowledge because that’ll be your anchor. Your truths will be tested many times throughout. From mentor opinions to public expectation to finance and the pressures of success. If you don’t have a truth to pair that information up with, you will lose your way! Not to mention, truth can be an incredible driver and at times a remedy when stuck on the hamster wheel.
Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?
Michael Jackson. I’ve never met anyone who is so powerfully in touch with his art, firing and confident on stage yet so timid, shy and as many know lost off stage. That guy changed the world. He was as big as Elvis from 3 years old. No one like him. Chuck Berry was another. His light hearted fun nature was contagious! When I have a problem that could do with a bit of light hearted and humorous attention I think, “What would Chuck do??”
