A QUICK CHAT WITH RHYS COVENTRY

Congrats on the release of ‘Small Talk’! How does it feel now to have the track out?

it really feels amazing, this song has been around for 4 1/2 years so to finally have it out in the world is a pretty special feeling. Especially because it's was my very first song that people believed in, and there were many times I thought the song would never be released.

Can you tell us a bit about the song and what it’s about?

I wrote this one back in 2019, where at the time, my 19 year old self believed he didn't deserved love, or he wouldn't ever be able to find it. A subject I, and many of my friends seem too relate to heavily all these years later.

How was the creative process while you were writing ‘Small Talk' and who did you work with on this track?

If I remember correctly I wrote this one in my bedroom, the day after I went to a music festival. I had left the festival feeling like I received little attention from girls, which made my 19 year old self question if I was good enough for anyone. From this I starting putting my feelings to paper, and with the words I found music to piece the song together. I recorded the track with Garrett Kato, and I was amazed how much he believed in the song considering how simple and naive I considered the story of the song be. I was also amazed on how much I still loved the song while recording it all of these years later.

You have seen an impressive amount of support from your previous releases, what has been the standout moment for you in terms of that support and / or any other achievements as an artist?

The response to my first few songs has been beyond what I ever expected, and it's been surreal to see my music slowly reach more people this early in my career.

Some of my standout moments so far have been Selling out my first ever Headline Show in my hometown of Adelaide. Scoring a few support shows with some amazing artists I've looked up to for years. But the biggest achievement would have to be playing a private show for the Matilda's soccer team, just before they made history with their World Cup performance. This was an opportunity I never would have dreamed of and something I'll forever be grateful for.

Have you got any live shows coming up?

Nothing is in the works at the moment, I have been really focusing on releasing new music and working on my craft, writing everyday.

Now that ‘Small Talk’ is out – what is coming next for Rhys Coventry?

I'll be moving to Byron Bay for the Summer, to do a season of busking, in hope to build a bigger fan base beyond my hometown. I will also be recording a whole lot of new music to release in 2024, potentially a few Ep's or an album is in the works. Really excited for what's to come.
