A Quick Chat with S.A.B

1. How can you explain ‘WELL MAYBE I AM’ to new listeners?

The exact definition of a mixtape has grown and shifted over hip-hop’s several-decade history. Many from my generation would agree that an album is a polished body of work that’s usually conceptual in nature, while mixtapes are unprocessed and often patched together. WELL MAYBE I AM is an amalgamation of sutured thoughts and ideas that just make for a really fun and cocky rap project.

2. What was the inspiration for the ‘GONNA GET GOT’ music video?

I drew on the likes of Jordan Ward, Planet Giza and Amine. The song is an inner monologue, so one of the first scenes I wanted to incorporate was a therapy session. Choreographing a fight scene was something I also wanted to challenge myself with, so being able to execute that in this music video was really dope.

3. What’s your favourite song on the mixtape and which do you think audiences will like most?

My personal favourites include BASQUIAT, which features boler mani, a rapper from Naarm who I’ve always looked up to in terms of creativity and production chops. To have shared a track with him on this tape is super fulfilling! Getting the gang back together for ORDER INTERLUDE, which features Tom, Melrose. And Elcid Flores, was also really special to me. Hearing how our voices have evolved through individual experience (since disbanding), was refreshing.

4. Tell us a story of how one of the collabs came about

I connected with Naarm artists for this mixtape release online, but had been fans of their work years prior to reaching out. I got to collaborate with both boler mani and Z. Lewis who are both based there. Funnily enough, Z. Lewis used to be a Brissy boy back in 2015/2016 and I had always been a huge fan of his frenetic yet poised delivery and flow. As for boler mani, I first saw him perform live at BIGSOUND 2019. The dude was in highschool doing interstate shows with such steez and individuality. I’m blessed to share tracks that go so hard with both of them.

5. If you were an instrument, which one would you be and why?

Artists have probably said drum kit before, but I’d love to just be a snare drum. Sharp, snappy and to the point. Put in a drum line and go Nick Cannon on me (a sentence I thought I’d never say).
