A Quick Chat with Sam Curtis Collective

Here with Sam Curtis from the Sam Curtis Collective talking about his band’s debut single ‘Waves'. First off what was the inspiration for the track?

To sum it up, the power of youth! It's what I’ve been telling people, haha! It’s a bit of an open ended song about spirited rebellion and activism. A reflection and homage to how each generation, or “Wave” as I put it in the song, has had their own impact on history. Whether that be in pursuit of climate action, equality or an end to conflict. For myself it’s also a bit of a reminder that the little things we do can add up overtime and have a real impact, no matter how distressing things might appear right now.

What was the process behind the first time recording and who was involved?

We were lucky enough to record at a studio in Reservoir as part of a youth music program called Indie Decibels, run by the council team there. Which was perfect! We got the freedom to record the band and all their parts over the space of a few weeks, which gave me a chance to really listen and add what I thought the track needed. I also got a chance to be super involved with the mixing portion, and learnt a lot about the fun things you can do and add in that world. Was super lucky for sure to be a part of that program.

Who were the main influences when you were writing and recording?
I think most listeners will be able to hear the Aussie roots/rock influences. I spent a lot of my recent years listening to Xavier Rudd, John Butler Trio and bands like the Cruel Sea. I don’t think guitar and songwriting really clicked for me until I heard and started to play that style or genre of music.

I know that you were performing as a solo artist until this year, what prompted starting the Collective?

It’s just a lot more fun I think. I’ve been in and out of a few pop and rock bands since I was seventeen, playing pub gigs and such. I ended up kind of missing having a group to riff off of. As I started playing with the band it all felt super natural to me, and I think I envisioned a lot of the songs with that bassy sub and big drum beats. Super grateful for Noi and Micheal (my bandmates) for dedicating their time to it.

What’s next for the Collective?

Well, we have our single launch at Bar 303 November the 16th, right before we take a little break while the other two members are abroad. Which is a good chance for me to properly plan the album we’ve got in motion! Really loved the recording process the first time around and I can’t wait to do it again.
