A QUICK CHAT WITH SLOW CINEMA

Congratulations on the release of ‘Pocket Knife’! What are your plans to celebrate it?

We are so excited to finally be releasing music again! To celebrate this release, we are putting on a big old rock show at Newcastle’s newest premier music venue - King St Hotel’s Warehouse. We will have Newcastle’s incredible ‘Good Glow’ opening the night and Sydney legends ‘JD & The Hungermen’ as main support (as part of a special run of co-headline shows we are doing with them).

Who are some of your musical influences, and how do you feel that comes out in your writing?

All five members come from differing backgrounds and our influences range from The Growlers, Rod Stewart, The Strokes, Jack Ladder, Foals, Band of Horses, All The Witches and Led Zeppelin. This is to name a few of the ones that truly shine through in our sound.

Each member has their own style of writing and each song delivered is always different due to who initiates that piece. Once a piece of music clicks with the band, each member draws on their own influences to add their own flavour with their instrument and creates the dynamic fusion that is - Slow Cinema.

What are some of your favourite live performances to date?

‘Balta’ was released at Oxford Arts Factory in late 2022 to a super energetic crowd which saw a few of our fans take to the stage at certain points in the evening making it a very unforgettable experience.

We have also had a couple of really fun and loose local shows in our hometown of Newcastle. In 2022, when we released Faye’s Fever Flow, we did a single release at The Ship Inn and the place was packed to the rafters. We get to have both guitarists on the floor for that show due to the small stage, so it makes for a really fun crowd interactive experience.

We also will certainly never forget having the opportunity to support the much-loved Kingswood, performing to a sold-out crowd at the Stag and Hunter in Newcastle. That room was ELECTRIC!

When rehearsing for shows, how do you ensure you are prepared and ready to play live as a band?

We’ve spent many many MANY hours rehearsing our set and coming up with ideas on how to roll our songs together to create an immersive and electric journey for our fans. We also take special care in curation of our setlists (graphs get involved quite a lot) to make sure our show is cohesive and can spark the right energy at the right time.

On top of that, we just love playing music together so getting into the studio to rehearse and jam is always a pleasure!

Who are some acts you’d love to open for one day and why?

We’ve certainly got some ‘pie in the sky’ goals with some much-loved bigger bands that we absolutely adore! But, on an Australian scale, we’d love to have the opportunity to open for acts such as Holy Holy, Gang of Youths, Middle Kids & Tame Impala to name just a couple.

How do you plan on wrapping up 2023?

After releasing ‘Pocket Knife’, we’ve got a fun run of shows to play including our single release show, a co-headline run with JD & The Hugermen and a fun little Christmas party show to cap the year off on Dec 23 with other local talent and DJ’s!
