A Quick Chat With Stacey Ann

Meet Stacey Ann, the effortlessly endearing indie/pop/soul artist hailing from Boorloo/Perth, whose infectious positivity and charming demeanour light up every room she enters. With her debut EP 'A Change In The Wind' set to drop on March 14, she's already capturing hearts with the release of her high-spirited single 'Ripples' (Out now). Stacey Ann's anthemic pop and soul not only dazzle with honeyed vocals but also carry earnest, heartfelt messages. We caught up with her to find out more about the track, her creative process and more.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

I was inspired to write this song by everyone around me who made me see how important it is to surround yourself with positive people, and how when this happens, it creates ripple effects in other areas of your life, too.

Lyrically, this song emphasises how friendships can pull you out of the water when you feel like you're drowning, but can also fill your cup when you can be there for them too and watch them thrive.

I wanted it to be a song that resonated with a lot of people and, in this, act as a reminder that we can often underestimate how far our good friendships can take us when times are tough.

Who are some of your influences and why?

Florence and the Machine and Stevie Nicks have always been strong influences for the power and resilience I strive for vocally and lyrically. Currently, I’ve been feeling inspired by Middle Kids and Maggie Rogers for the bouncy and more pop sound I’ve been leaning into.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

More often than not, I start a song from an idea or situation and begin writing about it in words, then once I have a solid story, I sit at the piano or guitar and play along until I find what feels right.
When we step into the studio to record, my band and I often start by recording a scratch track, then layer each instrument over individually until the full song is formed. Then we will sit with it, along with the producer, to add any other extra fun bits over the top

What do you think makes a great song?

A memorable hook or melody together with lyrics that create an emotional response, whether it be uplifting or heart wrenching.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

If I could sit at the piano alongside Florence Welch or Stevie Nicks and sing together, I could die right then and feel complete. If you harmonised with a goddess I’m sure you’d feel the same.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

As most musicians may experience, having a “day job” is quite necessary in order to fund our projects and careers. I feel very lucky that mine is also another creative outlet, which is cake decorating. I’m very passionate about baking and cake decorating, and taught myself from the age of 12.

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Joan & The Giants, Green Pools, Ribs, King Ibis, Ghost Care, Veruca Moon, Angie Colman!

Winter or summer and why?

Summer, because ice cream - not that winter stops me from eating it anyways…

What else do you have planned for 2024?

Releasing a debut EP and celebrating it with a launch in April, maybe with a few shows in the South-West. Then onto more gigs and more song writing!
