A Quick Chat with Vinyl 45

Congratulations on your latest release ‘Night Rhythms’! Can you tell us a bit about what the single is about?

‘Night Rhythms’ is a song that brings out that feeling of just wanting to forget about the struggles and turmoil we might be going through, putting on some great tunes and having some drinks and just dance, letting the beat and groove of the music take it all away for a while. Lyrically, that’s really our vocalists Aaron’s department as the lyrics were written during Covid and when he moved from his home of Sri-Lanka and was really missing that feeling.

How does this track, differ from your previous releases?

The previous releases were written around the same time as this song, and we wanted to cover a lot of ground with us as a trio at the time. ‘Information’ was more of a solid, heavy funk tune, ‘Top Down’ was a neo-soul summer anthem type song, and this feels like a dance hall, rock/disco dance track. Stylistically, it draws from the same realm of music as the other two being funk, rock and disco but this leans heavy on that four on the floor, gap band type thing with some Dynasty era Kiss and Toto thrown in. It's also fairly different style compared to ‘Information’ and ‘Top Down’ as we conjured a bit of a disco flavour for this track and didn't shy away from getting funky too!

When performing and writing, do you have any favourite gear/instruments that you love to use?

Curly R - I love my trusty Nord Stage for its versatility and I use to access all these awesome sounds that I love so much like the unmatched sound of a Hammond organ, Clavinets and electric pianos and a huge variety of awesome synthesis at my fingertips.

Alex A - My 2013 Gibson SGJ! It’s the guitar I’ve had with me the longest and looks like it’s been through war. It’s so comfortable for me and I feel like I can play anything on it which is so fitting for the various styles we go through in a Vinyl 45 set.

Lachie - Personally, I have a Snare drum that I think just cuts so well and has such a punchy sound for all our different styles. That snare drum is the Joey Jordison Pearl Signature Snare Drum! 13” Diameter with a 6.5” Depth, made out of Steel and paired with a Remo drumhead.

Kai - I’ve got a problem with collecting too many guitars, I may not be the Eddie van halen of this generation but that won’t stop me from acquiring some awesome stuff. My two favourites would have to be my 2013 les Paul traditional sunburst and my black hardtail Strat made from a mate of mine that works at the fender shop loaded with Seymour Duncan’s.

How did you go about creating the band, and all connecting as musicians in that process?

Us boys all met at university! We were all studying a Bachelor of Music together and got put in a performance group together! We performed Superstition for that assessment and the rest is history!

If fans want to hear the single live, where’s the best place for them to do so?

Make sure to come to our headline gig at the Bridge coming up on the 7th of October. We'll be supported by some awesome musicians, and we are gonna pull out all the stops to celebrate. We are also playing at Kelly’s on King on the 29th of September!

What are your plans to finish up 2023?

We have a huge couple of shows coming up in the next few months and with our new release, I’m certain there won’t be a shortage of shows for us! We will of course, continue to write music and perform for our fans, and hopefully maybe release some new music before the year ends too ;)
