A QUICK CHAT WITH WALLACE

CONGRATS ON THE NEW ALBUM! WHAT IS  'AND OTHER COLOURS' ALL ABOUT?

Wallace + Other Colours is a love letter to my favourite hues, linking my very visual way of moving through the world with the abstract, sonic space I love. I explore some serious themes like loss, anxiety and love but balance that with an ode to The West Wing, young love and reminiscing about living under a flight path in Sydney.

WHAT'S THE CREATIVE PROCESS FOR YOU, FROM WRITING TO RECORDING?

I do a lot of my writing while I’m on walks actually. Masks have been amazing for hiding the fact that I’m singing to myself, mid stroll!

I usually have a bunch of beats producers have sent through to me and also have lyric ideas in my phone that I add to whenever I hear or think of something cool. I normally put a track on repeat and mess around till something sticks. I really like working with an engineer in the studio to make sure I’m getting the best out of a session but have been doing a lot of my own tracking recently in my room.

WHAT WERE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES WHEN WRITING THE ALBUM?

Little Dragon, Jordan Rakei, Mara TK + Erykah Badu

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE TRACKS FROM THE ALBUM?

I think my favourite would have to be Orchid Care, it’s a bit more vulnerable than I normally get so it feels special in that way. I also really love my little elevator music, diss track Tickled Pink. It’s an interlude really, it makes me very happy.

IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH ANY ARTIST, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I would love to work with Flying Lotus. His brand of wonky hip hop is so unique and exciting and been a mainstay on any playlist I’ve created in the last decade.

WHEN NOT WORKING ON MUSIC, WHAT OTHER CREATIVE OUTLET DO YOU HAVE?

I’m a graphic designer by day, which is a super handy skill to have when there’s so many things to design as a musician. I also love to dance, and try and fit in as many hip hip and dancehall classes as I can.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE YEAR?

I’m hoping to jump on another tour before the year is out and finish something that the amazing, Sydney-based producer PlaneFace and I have been working on.
