A QUICK CHAT WITH WILLIE J AND THE BAD BOOKS

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Backdoor Man’

It’s a traditional blues lyric, paying tribute to the OG blues musicians who paved the way. I wrote a catchy riff and the lyrics just came to me.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

I’m influenced by 60’s and 70’s blues rock. It’s raw and passionate, lyrically it is fun and the imperfection is what draws me in.

What’s the creative process like for you?

A lot of the time when I’m jamming, I find myself playing riffs that I feel would make a good song. I guess the lyrics just come to me as I’m writing the melody!

If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?

The Australian music industry should recognise Australian blues artists more so than they currently do. The blues talent we have in this country is world class. Our musicians and the music we produce deserve a lot more appreciation than it currently does.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

As a child, I found it rather difficult to verbalise the way I feel. If it weren’t for music, life for me would’ve been very different. Music is the way I found purpose in life and it is something I can’t live without.

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with? Why?
Chrissy Amphlett! Chrissy and I would’ve made some kickass music!

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

Welp, you’re going to spend a lot of time playing at venues that don’t necessarily make much sense. Sometimes there may not be an audience but you still have to give it your all. Play every gig like it’s your last and who knows? One of the twenty watching you could be your ticket to the big stage!

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

I’ve had the great opportunity to jam with Geoff Achison. He is one of the finest musicians we have in this country.

Any plans for a tour on the cards?

No tours are planned at the moment – however, we’re hoping to get onto festival bills for 2023. Our single launch will be our next big gig at the Northcote Social club on the 6th of January 2023. January is going to be a big month for us as we have a lot of shows lined up, Pistol Pete’s, The Blues Train, and Lettuce Fest!
