A QUICK CHAT WITH XAVIER MAYNE

YOU ARE CREATIVELY REACHING NEW HEIGHTS, WHAT STANDS OUT AS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT CREATING YOUR DEBUT EP?

I think my proudest moment creating this EP is just knowing that I wholeheartedly enjoyed the process. I really had fun making these songs! Being able to work on this project with some of my best mates, people I love and trust is something that I’m also very proud and grateful to have had the opportunity to do on the EP.

OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS WE HAVE ALL BEEN FORCED TO LOOK OUTSIDE LIVE MUSIC TO GET INSPIRATION. HAVE YOU FOUND MANY NEW INFLUENCES AND IF SO, HOW HAVE THEY AFFECTED YOUR SONGWRITING / SOUND ?

These past couple years have been a very introspective experience for me, it really gave me the opportunity to look inward for inspiration rather. Sonically, I'm finding that I’m coming back to my roots, my music journey started out playing in bands. I’ve had this craving to utilise more live instruments into my production, both subtleties & leads, but I guess that’s maybe something you’ll hear more of in my next project. Peaches & Palm Trees is a track that I decided to swap an 808 out for a bass guitar though. I’ve been holding on to ‘Twenty One- EP’ for a hot minute, very happy to see it out there in the world finally.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE SOMETHING ABOUT THE MUSIC INDUSTRY WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Hmm. I’d love to see more female producers! I think the music industry is heading in the right direction. Mixing art and business will always be sticky and conflicting at times but I think the industry is evolving as collectively intended. I think the past couple years have shed light on many issues not only in the music industry but society in general. A lot has changed and there's still much more change to come and it’s our collective responsibility to adapt and influence these changes positively

IS THERE ANY BUCKET LIST VENUES / SHOWS YOU WANT TO DO THAT YOU HAVEN’T DONE YET AND WILL THAT LEAD TO A HEADLINE TOUR ANY TIME SOON?

I’m excited to be hopping on Chase Atlantic’s ‘Cold Nights’ World Tour. The Tivoli in Brisbane has been a venue I’ve been looking forward to for years, December 16 will be that day! The Horden in Sydney will be another one, Dec 15. There are some dope venues around North America and the UK that I’m looking forward to but it’ll be the venues back home in Aus that’ll really mean the most to me I feel. I’d love to do more festivals over the next year too. As for a headline tour, we’ll just have to wait and see. :)

I HAVE SEEN A BEER BOTTLE OPENED WITH THE INSIDE OF AN ELBOW… DO YOU HAVE ANY WEIRD TALENTS?

I took up fire twirling during lockdown. As for opening beer bottles with my elbow, I’m still yet to achieve such things.

WHO WAS YOUR FIRST CELEBRITY MUSICIAN CRUSH?

“Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got” J Lo.

CD’S OR VINYL?

Can’t beat the warmth of a vinyl.

IF YOU HAD TO LIVE OFF ONE COMBINATION SANDWICH AND DRINK COMBO WHAT WOULD IT BE?

A Cuban sandwich with like a kombucha of sorts. You know, balance.
