Introducing Montear

Firstly, where are you and what are you doing?

Well funnily enough, at this very moment I’m on a boat in the middle of the ocean heading back to Brisbane after a day of filming on location at the lovely Moreton Island for the upcoming Dear Earth clip. It was A LOT of fun, but I think I may have sunstroke!

Your debut single ‘Dear Earth’ is a beautiful track! How did it come together?

Thank you so much! At the beginning of the year I decided to make a more conscious effort in focusing on my music. So without any excuses or lack of time,  at the beginning of 2020 I decided to put my time to use and get this melody out of my head into a tangible state in the pre-production stage.

How many different instruments were used on the track?

Well instruments is an easy one to list... guitars , piano, drums and some synths. But it’s the layering of those elements and the treatment of each element that gives such a vast landscape to the sound. On top of these instruments, I love the element of soundscape s, so adding in those atmospheric sounds like foot steps and crickets is there to really help set the tone of a feeling and surrounding space for the listener to be taken somewhere else.

Your press shot doesn’t show your face. When is the big reveal?

Ultimately I just don’t think who I am is important haha! I just want to create beautiful music that brings inspiration and moments of wonder into the listeners' life.

How do you describe the ‘genre’ of your music?
I think 'cinematic post rock' is probably the most accurate description.

You list Icelandic legends Sigur Ros as an inspiration. What do you love most about them?
Personally I just love the way Jónsi creates cinematic masterpieces, and the feeling of closing your eyes whilst listening to music that insights visuals from sound is pretty amazing.

Who is your favourite Australian artist at the moment?
I’m really loving Tom Day at the moment. His music is so different and the production aesthetic is first class!

What have you been doing with your Covid down-time?
Working on and completing my upcoming EP. It’s been a journey.

What’s the plan for 2021?
Keep working towards my debut album. Plenty more songs in the bag!
