Review: The Vanns - Brighton Up Bar, Sydney

THE VANNS @ BRIGHTON UP BAR, APRIL 7, 2017

“Dark, sweaty, and exactly what rock n roll used to be.”

Kicking us off with an old fave, ‘Keep My Cool’, The Vanns did anything but that, wearing their hearts on their sleeves from the get go. Honestly, it almost felt like an early INXS gig, a whole lot of lucky people crammed into a sold out Brighton Up Bar, watching history in the making.

One of the hardest working bands around, the boys tore their way through a blistering set of old and brand new, the crowd with them all the way. Earlier tracks like ‘Guilty Love’, ‘Operator’, and of course ‘Belmore St’ had the crowd chanting every word, while their latest single, ‘Harder To Find’, saw the boys channel a little bit of Gang of Youths to the approval of their fans.

A very fitting cover of ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ snuck its way in mid set, completing the INXS allusion perfectly. And it seems like The Vanns really could be made of the very same grit, doggedness, and physical ability to smash their way through hundreds of tour dates each year. They’ve really tapped into something special, driven by this old school rock n roll mentality; they never seem to falter.

If you haven’t experienced The Vanns yet, get on board early; the way they’re going, catching them at a pub in Sydney may be something to tell your grandkids about.
