What Is Next for Lucy Francesca Dron

Lucy Francesca Dron blends a big alt/ indie-rock sound from her band with her poetic lyricism and versatile jazz vocal style that creates a really unique sound in her new single 'What Is Next?'. We got in touch to find out more about Lucy, her track and how she was taught music from her brother Tom Dron who plays a big role in her band.

We are loving the new single 'What Is Next?' Lucy. Can you tell us what the inspiration behind the track was?

Musically, the song actually started with the guitar riff in the chorus. I was really inspired by that as it was the most challenging guitar part that I had written at that stage. Wanting to be able to play it well really gave the rest of the song momentum. The second half of the song was originally sung in scat and was the first time I intentionally explored a jazz style in my vocals so that also inspired me. Overall, the song really evolved through pushing myself to write a more difficult song.

Who are your key musical influences and why?

Julian Casablancas and Amy Winehouse are probably my biggest vocal inspirations. I really love the grit and emotion in Julian's singing style, but how he still writes very creative, impressive melodies. As for Amy she really helped me clean up and refine my technique and of course she sings straight from the heart. As for songwriting recently Nai Palm and Moses Summey's music has been inspiring me to approach writing from a new perspective.

You started playing music at a young age with the cello and then voice. When was it that you started writing your own music and was there a significant moment or change that make you want to pursue it?

I started writing after my first relationship when I was 16 and have not stopped since. I think my whole life I've wanted to be a musician of some sort and there was never really a definitive point where I decided to pursue it. It just made sense as I was writing so much and had such a need and drive to perform and go somewhere with the songs.

We understand your brother Tom plays in the band. What's it like writing and performing with each other? Does it have its challenges? Is this something you always did growing up?

We've never had any challenges, it honestly works so perfectly. Growing up he was always teaching me songs on guitar by literally placing each finger on the specific frets because I couldn't understand theory. He is the main reason I have any musical abilities today from the amount of energy he put into teaching me things and adjusting how he taught me to suit my learning process. Performing with him is the best, it adds a whole other level of comfort and excitement and he's always so stoked to be a part of it which is amazing.

When not writing or performing, what can you be found getting up to?

I'm either spending lots of time in nature, working the riveting hospo life or hanging with the people that i love.

What Is Next for you?

I'm releasing my upcoming EP 'Leftovers' later this year and I am hoping to continue recording and playing more shows with the band.
