What's next for Lawson Hull?

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

It’s me trying to do a million genres at once but always coming back to this dreamy folk-pop thing, which is cool I guess. When it’s the guitar and me, it’s very Ryan Adams / Neil Young but kinda Aussie. I’m trying to find the balance between shitty bedroom melancholy and something that people would actually like to listen to on the daily and not be too depressed. If you like Boy & Bear, Little May and Lisa Mitchell, you might enjoy Lawson Hull.

Tell us a bit about 'Honey’

Honey is the breakdown of a close friend’s relationship with their partner. I saw what was going on for years but didn’t know how to approach my mate about it. When it’s your first long relationship, you can be blind to toxic behaviour, and become used to it. I guess that’s what was going on. The further I got into writing this song, I realised I was writing about my first long-term relationship. The song lyrics go between talking about my friends situation and mine. They were very similar.

Has your approach to making music changed at all since isolation?

Isolation definitely hindered my song-writing at first because I hate creating when people are around. The moment my partner and housemate went back to work I got hit with about five good songs. I feel that COVID has changed the world and has given me a chance to change with it. We’ve all been equalised in some way and now anyone has a chance at doing things differently. Not saying to expect anything wild from me, but I write differently these days. I’ve been collaborating via Zoom lately also, which turns out to be easier and less weird than I thought.

What is next for Lawson Hull?

Thanks to COVID, my work shut down and two weeks later I signed a record deal. I’ve been more pumped than ever to write and get songs demoed.

What’s next is recording some singles songs that I’m lowkey so excited to release because I feel they’re my best work, to be released early next year towards the next EP (after my debut EP this November). Besides that, I’m working out the live sound so we can play these songs with a band when we have the honour of doing so!
