What's next for Sophiegrophy?
AU / NZ New wave hip-hop Queen Sophiegrophy follows her genre bending debut EP, BOLD with new single, just released, titled “Drehpehs”.
Returning to her raw roots with a hand from producers Eric Boavida & Jia Lih, Drehpehs finds the Nigerian born, New Zealand raised artist holding court on a hard hitting banger that serves notice to fake culture warriors and those that would undermine the confidence in her own unique creative vision.
Steadily bubbling and developing over the past few years, we thought we would catch up with her to talk about her new single, festivals and what's to come in 2021.
Congratulations on the release of Drehpehs, it is sick! This came off the back of a really successful body of work. What has the process been like moving back from an EP to all the focus being on one single?
Thankyou, the process has been great, I had some time off for myself after my EP release so I had some chill time to find more things I love so I really recouped & wanted to come back harder.
The video for the new single is insane too!
Where did the idea come from to hire out the Palais Theatre?
Initially the setting was not meant to be in the theatre but Frank & Ant (Onelove/WVS) hooked it up & we were able to secure the spot which was perfect for the video. Big thanks to LiveNation, Chris and the Palais Theatre team were great!
Drehpehs takes aim at the “sheep” and culture warriors of the world that tend to lean on the success of their peers and generally spread negativity due to pure lack of their own uniqueness. Did this concept come to you because of a specific experience, or something you have viewed happened to others?
Drehpehs is the word “Shepherd" backwards. You know we live in a world where we would rather impersonate others instead of being ourselves because we are afraid to divulge our true selves to the world. Fall back & look around at the end of the day you are you, there’s no one out here that has the same soul & heart as you. I guess the era we are in right now is tough & people get more credit being someone else instead of themselves. They get positive reinforcement for not being themselves. We are all shepherds but it’s up to you - do you want to follow the crowd or do you want to be your own person & create your own crowd?
Obviously with the whole COVID saga, touring and the live music scene has taken a massive hit, but before then you could be seen performing at the Spotify official A1 showcase and the Festival X tour alongside Lil Pump, Blueface, Murda Beatz and a whole range of globally renowned artists.
What's your favourite live show been to date?
It's been a really crazy year for everyone but hopefully next year things gets better. Ohhh it’s so hard to choose but I’ll have to say Spotify official A1 showcase, it was just an amazing feeling seeing everyone & also seeing Australians /New Zealanders coming down to support us as artists, nothing beats that.
What's next for Sophiegrophy?
A lot more, a lot more. Definitely more music, more visuals & more importantly showing people who I really am not only as an artist but as a person!
