What’s on the horizon for Abroad

Abroad - Press Image.jpeg

Firstly, which Abroad member am I talking with right now?

Will!

If you had to choose one place abroad to write music and live in, where would it be and why?

Somewhere isolated. Don’t get me wrong, we’re both massively social people, but I love the idea of being in a cabin somewhere in the woods, being on some tranquil beach or somewhere like Joshua Tree. A place where we can really delve into some of the natural creativity.

So you’ve worked previously with Boo Seeka, have they given you any advice you’d like to share?

Not so much direct advice as work ethic. Those guys never stop working and writing. Apart from also being solid gold legends, we have a really compatible writing style, which I guess is why our collaboration works so well

What is your creative process?

Atmosphere first. Because of our separation living in different cities, songs need to start with the right vibe. It’s so easy for nuance to get lost in the transfer.

So we’ll usually start with some simple, lush pads coming from the DSI Prophet and a nice round Moog bass patch. Some basic drums and guitar to give the track some groove and then start to work on the hook. From that point there’s a lot of back and forth, which in a way is really great - only the strong ideas survive that process

What are 5 records that have influenced you the most and why?

Flight Facilities - Down to Earth.

I reference this album to this day when I’m thinking about timeless appeal. These guys really created this cruisey vibe that instantly takes me to the beach.

Bob Moses - Days Gone By

From the first track this album drew me in. It has this lower, more chilled energy that’s layered in subtle hooks and brilliant production.

Rufus Du Sol - Bloom

When it comes to incredible textures and hooks over solid drum and bass grooves. This album ticks all the boxes for me. A real sense of journey.

Caribou - Our Love

An incredible record start to finish. In the words of the opening track “I cant do without you”.

Hayden James - Between Us

Everything this guy does makes you want to dance. And at the heart of Abroad that’s what we want to do too.

What’s on the horizon for Abroad after ‘Alright, Ok?’

Everything! We’ve been writing a lot of tracks and what’s coming next really solidifies the caliber of material we’ve been putting out lately.

The other big thing for us is touring. We’ve been quietly working away on trying to bring the right energy to Abroad in a live sense and I’m really excited to share that side of us.
