nyck announce 'Alive' EP for June 9 release + playing live in Syd and Melb

In the middle of 2016, nyck (pronounced n.y.c.k) submitted their first song, ‘Decision’, to triple j Unearthed. Within a few short hours, it was broadcast on the triple j Unearthed airwaves and soon went on to become one of the most requested and played songs on the station that year, earning the pair a feature artist nomination.

After gaining the attention of labels all over the country and touring as support for Emma Louise’s album tour, the duo signed with new Mushroom imprint 100s + 1000s. Following the release of their second single ‘Speak My Mind’ nyck hit the road as support on the completely sold out Amy Shark Adore Tour. They say the journey is more important than the destination, which could not be truer for nyck. So today it is with great pleasure 100s + 1000s announce nyck’s debut EP Alive will be released on Friday 9 June.

nyck is the project of Nick Acquroff and Dominique Garrard. Their instrumentation is unpolished, raw and poignant, their vocals harrowing and harmonies sweet. The combination provides a juxtaposition that lends their music a kind of rare vulnerability, a sweet sorrow that everyone is akin to – something familiar.

The songs were written over the space of 12 weeks in winter 2016. Nick was in the midst of a long-term relationship breakup, people he loved started to pass away, he left his job and moved houses twice. This was when Nick met Dom who had a shared love for music, film and the beauty that comes from heartbreak. Together the two began working on some of Nick’s rough sketches – they took all of the blemishes, cracks and mistakes and pulled together songs from Nick’s 12 weeks of cathartic songwriting. Alive was born. As Nick explains, “It’s about building from a place of feeling completely detached to feeling alive again.” It’s optimistic sadness.

Lyrically, Nick writes literally. It’s all true and about his own experience, a no-holds-barred window into his life and everything that goes with it. Conversely, Dom brings a sophistication and a musical direction that encouraged simplicity and honesty.  Much of the music was recorded in Nick’s bedroom then produced in Hayden Calnin’s Melbourne studio. The process was about creating a body of work that would be hard to play to friends and family and would capture loss with an air of hyper-authenticity. This much they have achieved. The tracks on Alive are linear – they appear in the order they were written – which means the EP captures the chronology of a breakup, heartbreak and change.

Off the back of touring nationally on Amy Shark’s sold out Adore Tour, don’t miss nyck at their intimate Speak My Mind single showcases taking place tomorrow night, Friday 21 April at Brighton Up Bar in Sydney and next Friday 28 April at Workers Club in Melbourne.
