RED BULL SOUND SELECT LAUNCHES IN MELBOURNE

Having already established a strong presence across North America, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and Sydney, Red Bull Sound Select - an artist development program that delivers the best in new music - will launch in Melbourne this June.

The format of Red Bull Sound Select sees the program team with tastemakers in each region to curate artists from local scenes; bringing together musicians at the onset of their careers with already established acts. Red Bull Sound Select supports these acts through 200+ annual shows and festivals, in-studio collaborations, music distribution opportunities and marketing. On an international scale, Red Bull Sound Select has teamed up with the likes of Chance the Rapper, Mick Jenkins, Gallant and Jazz Cartier, while Mansionair, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Sampa The Great have been of the artists to work with the program locally.

Kicking off the inaugural event series, June 29 boasts an unmistakably local punk-leaning lineup at Collingwood’s Gasometer Hotel, featuring soulful local headliners Tyrannamen, snarling Sexy Romance affiliates Sex Drive and hard-working act, Miss Destiny, curated by Chapter Music.

Born from a one-night-only house party band featuring members of Twerps, The Stevens and Boomgates, local soul rock favourites Tyrannamen are the first headliners of Red Bull Sound Select in Melbourne, and have clocked a reputation for their rare, blistering live sets and spirited releases. From highlight performances at Golden Plains Festival and Melbourne Music Week to the anticipated release of their self-titled LP last year, don’t miss their Red Bull Sound Select debut.

From further North, between Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, comes Sex Drive, a four-piece known for their fast and fierce sound, and high energy moves. Following the recent release of their self-titled seven-inch, the group make a long-awaited visit to Melbourne with their unrelenting punk rock.

Off the back of their VIVID Live appearance for Repressed Records’ 15th Anniversary, Melbourne’s hard rock group Miss Destiny return homewards to complete the evening with a powerhouse performance. Their self-titled debut album via R.I.P Society has seen the group tour the States and visit Meredith’s famed amphitheatre.

DJs Psychedelic Coven will bridge the night's live sets with their paranoid selections. The duo combines Jenny Branagan, frontwoman of dome-drone pop combo Nun, and Kate Reid, who celebrates local minimal synth with her label It Records.

From June, Red Bull Sound Select will visit the Victorian capital for a monthly lineup programmed in turns by internationally esteemed record label, Chapter Music, and existing Red Bull Sound Select Sydney curators, I OH YOU and Laneway Festival.

As one of Australia’s longest running independents, Chapter Music co-founders Ben O’Connor and Guy Blackman join Red Bull Sound Select’s curating ranks via their combined wealth of knowledge that reflects a 25 year history releasing adventurous, idiosyncratic Australian music into the world. Hugely loved record label and taste-making juggernaut, I OH YOU return to their stomping grounds to program both Red Bull Sound Select Melbourne and Sydney, as does Laneway Festival, well-known purveyors of fresh, seminal music.
