Homestate’s Top 10 90s / Naughties Throwbacks

Perth boy’s in Homestate are back with their nostalgic brand of pop-punk, sounding almost as if they’ve been pulled straight from the early 2000s with their fast, anthemic sing-along choruses and energy-fuelled delivery. The Daria inspired single “Sick Sad World” was their first offering from the upcoming self-titled EP due out November 29, and today brings the second installment, “Sunny Day”. “Sunny Day” was mixed and mastered by Seb Barlow (Neck Deep, Woes, As It Is, WSTR) and is about taking the time to be the right person for the sake of someone else after having been broken by a run of bad relationships. In line with the themes presented in “Sick Sad World”, “Sunny Day” continues sonically with its punk vibes reminiscent of Sum 41 and the like at their early 2000s peak.

Drawing influence from the better parts of the 90s and naughties, we want to know exactly what it is about the era of grunge, big hair and apathetic pop culture that has stuck with the boys from Homestate...

1.     Early mornings watching cartoons, complete with a bowl of cereal was simply perfection. It’s the little things you know?! We were so lucky growing up with some of the greatest animations of all time. If you don’t mind throwing back, some of our favs include Daria, Beast Wars: Transformers, Arthur, Captain Planet, The Wild Thornberry’s, Catdog, The Angry Beavers, Rocko’s Modern Life and the often-forgotten show, Doug. Nothing but fond memories.

2.     We’re pretty convinced that the Nintendo 64 was the pinnacle of gaming and we were lucky enough to grow up playing – Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Golden Eye, Mario Kart 64, hell even Perfect Dark. On the gaming throwback, notable mentions to THPS2 and Worms 2: Armageddon! #nerds

3.     The Parent Trap. Need we say more?

4.     Not quite from the 90’s but definitely a worthy candidate is Ferris Bueller's Day Off – High School attendance has been shaky ever since.

5.     “Rawr!”. XD. MySpace. Tell me all about your favourite bands! We grew up in the height of the MySpace scene and we’re convinced that we’re better people because of it. Those were the days! On that note, did anyone else have like hundreds of rando’s on MSN?

6.     The Starting Line, Say Anything, Yellowcard, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Mayday Parade, Forever The Sickest Kids… all courtesy of dial-up internet and LimeWire… yikes. There’s obviously a bunch of other artists from this era that thrown down hard but chances are you’ll already be well familiar with them!

7.     CD’s were such a good medium for music (if you didn’t get them hella scratched of course), with the rise of streaming now it’s kind of a shame, there’s just something magical about ripping out your favourite album from a big-ass CD folder and playing it start to finish. Also, discmans.

8.     Parting your hair straight down the middle for your school photo. I don’t think we’ve ever looked as handsome since.

9.     Shawshank… Forrest Gump. We’ve got a lot of movies in this list but they’re so good! None of this modern, can’t stay focused for more than 10 minutes, marvel type formula.

10.  Hypercolor. Seriously, this needs to come back!

Homestate will launch their brand new self-titled EP to their homegrown audience at Lucy's Love Shack in Perth on Saturday November 30 alongside friends Carrington, Pacific and Abandon Limbo - tickets available at the door, so put this one in your calendar and get down early!
