A Quick Chat With Amy Sheppard

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Nothing But Wild’?

Nothing But Wild was written on my 2019 trip to Nashville. It was co-written with Lindsay Rimes + Tranny Anderson. The inspiration came from me being on a grand adventure to Nashville. I was developing a new project, I was in a new city and it was all very exciting. As the song developed, it became more about the innate desire I have to escape the city as often as I can to ground myself in my natural surroundings. It is also about having someone very special to share the best things in life with.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

I have so many influences it’s hard to choose a couple. For this particular project my biggest influences came from Kasey Musgraves, Marren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini and even Shania Twain.

What’s the creative process like for you?

It’s different every time. Often, I’ll think of a song idea randomly and write it down in my phone notes. When I’m feeling really creative at home or when I’m in a songwriting session I call upon these ideas to kick off the session. I love seeing how these ideas can morph into a totally new idea in the songwriting process but it’s always great to have a springboard to start from. I love collaborating and find it very helpful working with producers to draw out unique  sounds which can also spark new ideas. I’m very much looking forward to blending the pop world with the country world; using live and midi instruments to create something which satisfies my taste  for both pop and country music.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

Life would be very bland and I’d probably be a very anxious person.  I have so much fun creating music and playing shows. It’s my universe.

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?  Why?

Keith Urban. Sheppard was fortunate enough to tour Australia with him a few years back and it was the most incredible experience. Keith is one of the most professional, talented and kind artists I’ve ever met. He has killer country/pop sensibilities and I just love his music. Maybe one day!

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

Have a vision and go for it! When I write a song or have an idea about a project I become obsessed. I think about every detail: Who I’d love to work with, what I want my sound to be, my target audience, my image, my merch. I create a mini world to compliment the songs I want to write or have just written. The next step is to get out there and do the hard yards. Get to the shows, meet everyone you possibly can in the industry, connect with other artists, build a community on social media and give it your all.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

Aside from Keith Urban, I’ve been fortunate to meet some pretty interesting people including Ariana Grande, Robbie Williams + Megan Trainor.

Favourite hangover cure?

Pancakes.

Any plans for a tour on the cards?

I’m currently getting a band together, I’m playing CMC rocks in September and I’m sure more shows will come together as I begin to release more music.
