A QUICK CHAT WITH SCREAMFEEDER

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Don’t Get Me Started’’

Plugging into garage band to have some fun one day, I don’t normally write songs on computer. I started off with some guitar and then the counter rhythm guitar and had a ball playing bass like I don’t normally play bass just to have some fun but it started to sound like a really cool little song. The inspiration was purely being in the moment, I didn’t set out to write it, it kinda just appeared. I had been listening to Wipers and Mission of Burma at the time and was in that kind of mood for melodic but frenetic sound.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

I read lots and I people watch, I think about things deeply I suppose and it’s hard to say what influences you when everything around you is part of what you dream and what affects you each day.  I think sometimes what I’m writing is sometimes what I wish I could have said to someone in the moment or just grand sweeping gestures about what you see unfolding in front of you.

What’s the creative process like for you?

It’s a bit of a mystery still. I let it happen when it happens.

If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?

How much time have you got? Sexism, ageism, racism,  royalty rates for streaming, fair pay, superannuation, being taken seriously by the federal govt as a legitimate source of work for thousands of people that makes billions of dollars and contributes to culture and the arts. That’s just some ideas.

WORDS BY by Kellie from Screamfeeder.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

I think I’d be working in the film industry or something. Probably would have become a video editor for tv or something like that.

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?  Why?

It’s a dream to work on a solo album with Flood. He produced (with Alan Moulder) To Bring You My Love by PJ Harvey among so many other amazing records by Jesus and Mary Chain, NiN, Smashing Pumpkins, , but that record in particular is an incredible collection of songs, sounds and space. I’d love to work on some ideas with him.

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

Have a back up plan, get a degree or skills in other areas, be prepared to have to work all the time on other things at the same time as your music. If you’re a self releasing artist, you will need to do all the boring admin yourself, skill up. Make music you want to listen to. Don’t appeal to trends. Be authentic.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

Anna Laverty was great to work with and would regale us with stories each night over dinner. So many great stories!  Stevie Scott who I play with in Deafcult  has a really interesting way of working, the way we have recorded demos and vocal takes I have learned so much from him.

Favourite hangover cure?

Don’t drink the night before

What can fans expect from your tour?

I think they can expect us having fun and playing a lot of old and new songs.
