A Quick Chat with Penny Ivy

Alien has a slightly different sound than previous releases, what changed during the creative process with this track?

I think the sound evolved because I was really able to take my time and properly fall in love with sounds and ideas before settling. It’s been a while since ‘Different’ came out and I wanted the sound to be even more authentic to me and what I love to listen to. I really wanted the lyrics to hit people harder too. I’m really thankful to the producer James Angus for helping me mould the sound to who I am.

What is the song about?

Alien is about how I’ve always felt. Weird; socially, physically and mentally. I’m not a girl anymore and I feel like I can share these common feelings with a lot of friends or random strangers and I wish someone told me 20 years old that it’s okay to feel these things because later in life you’ll hopefully realise life's too short to be like anyone else.

What would you like this song to reflect about you?

I want this song to represent the anxious weirdos club, for everyone, not just me. Now that I'm older I feel proud to be me with all my quirks. Things I thought would never be likeable actually are. I think the thing is…We forget there’s 7 billion people in the world with different tastes.

What are your biggest achievements over the past 12 months?

Definitely the biggest achievement is being a part of Example’s new album ‘We May Grow Old But We Never Grow Up’. I’m also proud to say I have enough new music to release an EP.

Can we expect any live shows coming up?

Later this year for sure! I’m about to head to the UK to perform with Example at summer festivals, so when I get back we’ll plan some shows.

Is this song part of a bigger project?

Indeed! There’s a lyric in Alien that gives away the EP title. I won’t give it away yet.
