A QUICK CHAT WITH CHRIS LANZON

For people who haven't heard of Chris Lanzon, how would you describe the project in a tweet?

Music for your feelings.

What's your new single rollercoaster about?
It’s about feeling lost, and consumed by your emotions. When things get overwhelming and you feel stuck in a certain headspace, and you’re just surrendering to the ups and downs of life.

Tell us about a life moment where your stomach dropped, as if you were in fact on a rollercoaster?
The first thing that comes to mind is this crazy moment when we were filming the video for ‘June’. There was this loud thundering like fireworks, only it was 6am and we were quite literally in the middle of nowhere. We looked up and saw this space junk exploding across the sky. I think it was an old satellite or something. That was pretty wild.

You directed the music video too! Why the bags on heads?
The video was a tonne of fun to make. It was an idea I had for a while and it was cool to have a bunch of my friends be part of it and help make it happen. The bags represent different emotions, and having everyone wear them on their heads was a metaphor for being consumed by a feeling. Happy, sad, angry, confused. Whatever you’re feeling, we’re all going through the motions, doing what we’re supposed to be doing day-to-day. Sometimes our emotional states can cloud our whole identity. It can feel super isolating, but we’re all experiencing life together. We’re never alone in how we’re feeling. I wanted to try capture that in the video.

What is the dark side of writing music?
Telling your deepest darkest secrets.

What's the light side of writing music?
Telling your deepest darkest secrets!

You supported Eloise this week, what's the thought process when deciding on a support set list?
When you’re an opener, you’re typically playing to a room of people who have never heard your music. So I try to make sure the set list invites people into my world, but also gives them something familiar. I think it always helps to tell stories, and throw a cover or two into the set.

Who is the most underrated Australian act at the moment?
Honestly, there are so many. Too many! People I feel lucky to call my friends. Jerome Blazé, Sarah Levins, the Full Circle crew, Phoebe Go, Armlock, LOVER, I could name so many more. There are some truly world-class artists coming up. It’s an exciting time.

What's next for Chris Lanzon?

My third EP ‘Dark Side’ will be out in April. I’m really excited for that. I’ve also started working on the next project… I want to make an album. I’ve got a title, concept, and a handful of songs for it so far. I also want to play more shows! I got a band together at the end of last year and we’re hanging to get on the road. More everything.
