5 FEMALE ARTISTS THAT CHANGED LIYAH KNIGHT’S LIFE

Billie Holiday

A raw and unmistakable tone that touches me in such a unique way.

When I listen to Holiday, she makes me feel like the only listener in the room, because her delivery is so personal; from her heart to yours.

Her background story is one of tribulation and heartache, so to hear her transform that into something so beautiful is mesmerizing.

Amy Winehouse

She never shied away, never butchered her words. There’s something to be said about the bravery in expressing how you feel in a single moment. I was alternating between Frank and Back to Black all through high school, trying to figure out how I could use sin cos tan to make a career out of pouring my heart out to strangers.

SZA

I heard Need To Know by Wale and NEEDED to know more about this other-worldly artist SZA, so I headed straight to her discography and to no surprise was in love almost instantly. Her sultry voice is always delivering girl power wisdom and I think she’s really fearless. Little did I know, she’d go on to release one of my favourite projects ever, CTRL.

Rihanna

Versatile, brave, and a woman I will definitely be putting my grandchildren on to.

She’s an inspiration in and outside her music and she’s so multi-faceted. We all are, but I guess it’s a matter of whether you’re bold enough to explore all those pockets which Rihanna is, and that speaks volumes about the trust she has in herself creatively.

Kehlani

You Should Be Here mixtape was essentially the soundtrack to my freshmen year. I didn’t have a car and our speaker at home was trash, so I’d eagerly jump at any given chance to steal the aux in my teammates’ cars and belt along to Down For You ft. BJ The Chicago Kid. The Letter hits all the nooks and crannies of the heart.
