A Quick Chat with Ari Jacob

Congrats on the release of ‘Son Called Moon’! What can listeners expect from the album and musical?

Thanks! Listeners can expect an uplifting, moving but gentle folk score, with thought-provoking lyrics that will leave you asking questions.

What was the initial spark that got you started in pursuing music seriously?

I've been playing music since I was 4! I don't know what seriously means, I try never to take it to seriously, but to treat it with great respect.

Tell us a bit about the most recent album. What does it mean to you?

The album is a collection of songs that I wrote over the course of 3 years. The concept however, had been developing for 7 years. It is a very personal story about my journey with sexuality, my struggles with God and religion, my search for true intimacy and connection. It was recorded super live, with a group of the most amazing humans in a very special location on the border of Lebanon and Israel. It is my most raw, but also most polished, sensitive and honest creation yet.

Are there any inspirations you look to beyond music when writing or performing?

A lot of my lyrics are inspired by Jewish and Eastern philosophy.

When not working on music, what other creative outlets are you pursuing?

Mostly music, but some theatre and writing,

Name the five songs that have informed your song writing more than any others.

Wow that's a big one. Probably mostly musical theatre songs:

- The Guilty Ones (Spring Awakening)

- The New World (Songs for a New World)

- The Next Ten Minutes (The Last 5 Years)

- Only Us (Dear Evan Hansen)

- Make Up Your Mind (Next to Normal)

What Australian bands are you listening to at the moment?

Not many at the moment actually, But my favourite Aussie artist of all time is Josh Pyke.

Where has been your favourite place to perform so far? What’s a venue you hope to play one day?

Chapel of Chapel has been the best. One day...I don't know...Rod Laver ?

How do you hope your music might impact listeners?

I hope it makes them reflect, feel connected to themselves, maybe feel hopeful about the future, maybe drive with the window down, or cry on the couch.
