A QUICK CHAT WITH AYA J

Congratulations on the new track! How did the track come about, from writing to producing?

Thank you! This song was written about a year ago and came together with the substance between me and the producer. The lyrics were written whilst sitting on a veranda in Byron Bay overlooking the water which I felt helped me capture the essence of this song and helped me channel what I was feeling at the time onto paper. The lyrics are a story of wanting your partner to give you themselves completely and love you to their full capacity so that you can give them the same in return. The track originally was a lot barer than the version is now and had even more of a dark minor feel to it. After letting the song sit and giving it time to develop it turned into a more fun dance song but kept true to its original feel.

What inspired you to first get into music, and what inspires you now to continue creating?

My father was one of my biggest inspirations. I grew up with guitars constantly around my house as my dad was a hardcore guitar fan and loved to play. After teaching me to play at a young age, I channelled my own melodic interests and turned my music passion into my own and from then, made my music what I wanted it to do.

As for what keeps inspiring me to create, I feel that the main reason is the love for it, how it makes me feel and how it helps me through some of my toughest emotions and flourish through my best. Secondly, it is the excitement in seeing how my sound can change every time I write something new.

Loving the video clip! Tell us about the process of creating the concept of the video and the execution?

The video idea came purely from the story behind the song, but we decided to change it into a not so happy ending. The song is written about your partner giving you everything and hoping they eventually do so you can reciprocate it. The video is portrayed in the way of you still wanting to give them everything but instead they don’t quite do that and they leave you high and dry. We wanted to portray the idea with not all sunshine and rainbows to create interest for the viewers. The way in which we executed this was to create the clip around the certain idea that the guy in the clip (me), was coming to the party to be with the girl but instead at the last minute, I walked in to find her with another guy. Close but not quite, I guess was that idea that we hoped to give the viewer but make it still interesting and close to the actual meaning of the song.

What are some unique aspects of the way you create that you’d like fans to take away from your music?

The way I create music is simple. I am a strong believer of simple hooks and melodies are what make the most songs. Although some of the most technically made songs are some of the best songs, my personal belief is that simplicity will win always. I guess what I’m saying is look at the greats. ‘The Rolling Stones’, ‘The Beatles’, ‘Fleetwood Mac’ etc. These are just some of the most amazing songwriters in the world and most of their songs are derived from a simple chord progression, bass groove and slick melody that sticks in your head for decades. These are the aspects that I try and achieve in my creating of music.

How do you plan on finishing up 2022?

To finish 2022, I’d love to see this single go to amazing places. We’ve been playing some amazing shows over the last few months and I’d love to finish with a single that makes people feel as good as it makes me and get heard by thousands of people. I’d love to play some more amazing shows that would have me leaving 2022 with an amazing feeling, smile on my face and ready to swing into 2023 with more releases and only bigger things on my mind. Also, the idea of releasing another sneaky song before the year is out sounding pretty good also, if you know what I mean.
