A QUICK CHAT WITH NURIA

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Fucking Your Style?’

Well…it’s a song about how we manage being the complex creatures that we are and still find harmony in relationships. I’m a compulsive perfectionist and apologiser and have always had this sense of not being good enough for the people around me. ‘Fucking Your Style’ came about when I had this sense of needing to be ok with not always getting it right and maybe even rejoicing for the things that make me who I am. It was a massively therapeutic process. I think we could all feel better about accepting some of our weirdness.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

I love all kinds of music, but over the last few years I’ve been really into electronic vibes and those real, big body production techniques that get me totally wrapped up in the music. I listen to music all the time and I guess it constantly feeds into my songwriting ideas.

What’s the creative process like for you?

Highly variable! Often comes in little runs of creative juice which then spontaneously dries up and I have to wait until the next wave. ‘Fucking Your Style’ took literally about 1 hour to write and get to a pretty fleshed out level of initial production. I was in a piss of a mood and I just rolled with it. But by the end of that hour I was feeling extremely satisfied!!

If you could change something about the Australian/New Zealand music industry what would it be?

I would love a way for unknown indie artists such as myself to have a bigger voice. It often feels virtually impossible to be heard in this massively oversaturated industry. I would also love for a bigger focus to be on the music itself rather than the youth and beauty and ‘cool factor’ of the artist which I still feel has a strong hold on the whole thing.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

I’d probably do more gardening and spend less time posting selfies on social media which would be fantastic! But alas, I would have many repressed emotions and would be sad not to be singing satisfying songs like ‘Fucking Your Style’

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?  Why?

Gotye. No question. We could do great things and he seems like he’d be excellent value to have around. Also his name is Wally. I nearly named one of my sons Wally.  I mean what a fucking legend!

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

Oh wow….get a day job you enjoy as a solid back up?? Na, be honest and persevere and make sure you are doing it for the right reasons like the love of the music. I think if that is the reason you are doing it you can be satisfied no matter how far you get with it, no matter if you hit the big time or you’re just playing to the seniors at your local Juicy Rump.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

I’m going to say Sam Phay - the producer of this song. We’ve worked together on about 20 songs by now. He’s been exposed to all the deepest depths of my heart through the volume of my music he’s heard! I’ve never spoken to the dude but have the biggest respect and genuinely think he is an absolute genius.

Favourite hangover cure?

I’m an absolute nanna as well as a total lightweight and last time I got truly trolleyed would have been in my early twenties when I was blissfully pre hangovers. But you know, I move among the medical world so would probably get one of my friends to sort me out with a litre of normal saline : )

Any plans for a tour on the cards?

Not at this stage but would love to! Stay tuned : )
