A Quick Chat with Claudio

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for the new single, Losing You?

A rapidly failing relationship some years back - watching it all fall apart in real time, despite us going into it thinking we were conscious and could handle what life would throw at us

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

Hhmmm.. There are so many. I think the biggest influence on my songwriting is actually being a composer. Where you practise being objective about what & how you score & for whom. That process is really helpful as an artist. I like to be really intentional & constricted when I’m writing.

What’s the creative process like for you?

Sometimes solo & arduous; sometimes solo & meditative

If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?

Sincerely, I just don’t have much personal experience of it. I lived  in Paris, France for 11 years. I came back to Perth & had a child and then COVID hit so, ironically, I very much still feel like a foreigner!

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

Unimaginable. I can’t even entertain the thought.

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?  Why?

Anyone who makes music that makes me forget to analyse it. James Blake. Kevin Parker….

I love that any true collab creates a thing that couldn’t ever exist without each of the contributors.

I’d just love to see what would come of it.

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

Find the balance between knowing you have something to offer and also knowing that whatever you think you know is only the tip of the iceberg.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

King Britt. One of the founding fathers of electronic music (Philadelphia) He brought me out to the U.S to play my first show in 2006. He’s the most travelled, seasoned, experienced person I know in many regards. And yet whenever I saw him, regardless of which city it was in, you would have sworn he was outside of his home town for the very first time. He practises ‘amazement’ like the wellness culture practises ‘gratitude’. A master of living.

Favourite hangover cure?

No one will even believe me but I have an ALCOHOL allergy, not even kidding.

I am instantly hungover, after a few sips of wine.

Any plans for a tour on the cards?

Not in the traditional way. Not now that I have a little one. But I have plans for a different style of one-off events. Immersive & multi-disciplinary. I just want to create experiences for myself and others that really hold us in the present moment.
