A Quick Chat With Delilah Rose

Delilah Rose is bringing bold, hypnotic energy to 2024 with ‘Sophia’, her latest single out now. Rooted in the sultry, velvet-draped sounds of ’70s rock, ‘Sophia’ is a swampy, electrifying anthem that explores faith, individuality, and the divine feminine. Known for her powerhouse presence in the Meanjin music scene, Delilah has graced stages at Nannup Music Festival, Wave Rock Festival, and beyond, earning accolades like Best Group at the WA Country Music Awards. With hypnotic guitar riffs, dynamic percussion, and a raw, soulful edge, ‘Sophia’ is a fierce reclamation of self—born from personal transformation and a deep reckoning with faith. Fans can experience it live at her single launch on March 28 at Method Cafe, QLD. We caught up with Delilah Rose to talk about the track, her journey, and what’s next.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?
This track is about my faith deconstruction. It’s about discovering the divine feminine and it’s about freedom and paradox. The take-away for people to shake things up. To have an open mind. To really see the people around you. To roar. To understand that you can hold two truths at the same time. To show people the real you. Because there is only one of you.

Who are some of your influences, and why?
The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Nikki Lane, Amyl & the Sniffers, David Bowie. I love them all because they rock unashamedly, and they do it in style!

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?
The creative process for me is therapy. Every step of the way. Creating is how I understand the world. By taking the mess, the darkness, the awful and make it into melody and words and colour and light.

What do you think makes a great song?
How long is a piece of string?
Although I am quite partial to B3 hammond organ, 6/8 timing, a big soul voice and an outro that rocks out in double time.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Ooh ooh Joe Cocker because… he’s Joe Cocker! Maybe Mick Jagger as well? Ooh and Lady Gaga!

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?
Since moving to Brisbane I’ve started drawing again, so this next body of work will also come with a Zine which I work on between all of the other things. I used to love cooking but I don’t have much time anymore! I also run a monthly event called The Song Cafe showcasing women, First Nations and gender non-conforming in Meanjin. I LOVE encouraging other creatives!

Who are some local bands we should check out?
June Low, Jamie Lee Dimes, Worm Girlz, Clare Cowley, The Stomps

Winter or summer and why?
Summer. I get so cold in winter! Although I do have many flares and fur coats which I love wearing in winter. Don’t need them much anymore in Brisbane though! I’ve also discovered I’m a creek person! So I’ve been enjoying discovering the waterways around SW Qld with the kids and hubby.

What do you have planned for 2025?
Releasing “The Unlearning” my sophomore album.
Touring east coast
Songwriting retreats in WA and Qld
Trying to keep up with the laundry pile
Resting between all of these things
