A Quick Chat with miramar
Your new single, ‘Highlight Of My Week’, takes a more stripped-back, understated approach to production compared to your usual high-energy sound. What drew you to this approach, and is this something you plan to delve into more on future releases?
For our upcoming EP, we made a conscious decision to try get to the heart of the songs we were writing and not dilute it with complicated production. Of course, when we started making ‘Highlight’, that was exactly what we did—way overcomplicated the whole thing because we were so proud of what we’d written we wanted it to be something special. That pressure we put on ourselves to make the arrangement perfect meant we overworked it to death, but eventually we realised that such an intimate song needed an intimate approach, so we stripped it back to the bones and loved it. This process of listening to what the song is and using our production to complement that is definitely something we’re going to focus on going forwards, but we are also keen to keep exploring that more raw and vulnerable sound. But we also have plenty of high-energy tunes in the bank, don’t worry about that!
The song is lifted from your upcoming sophomore EP. What can you tell us about the record at this stage, and what can fans expect from this next chapter of Miramar?
The EP is a blend of both new songs and tracks we've been holding onto for up to three years. This collection carries a much brighter, more uplifting energy compared to our previous EP, East, which explored the feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and disorientation that often come with your 20s. In many ways, this project represents the other side of that journey, one that embraces joy, optimism, and a renewed sense of unbothered.
We wanted this EP to capture the warmth of connection, the excitement of new experiences, and the nostalgia of unforgettable moments. It’s inspired by summer with friends, adventure, and the feeling of being completely present in the moment. Each track has its own unique personality, yet together, they create a cohesive soundscape that radiates positivity and light.
While East reflected the weight of growing pains, this project is about celebrating growth and the moments that make it all worthwhile. It’s a reminder that no matter how uncertain life can feel, there are always moments of pure happiness waiting to be embraced. This EP is our feel-good soundtrack, and we can’t wait for you to experience it.
Where do you draw inspiration or influence from when writing lyrics and producing music?
Our lyrics tend to be introspective, serving as a way to capture a moment, feeling, or vibe. We focus on the small details of life, sometimes weaving them into imagined narratives that allow us to explore our creativity beyond personal experience.
On the production side, we draw inspiration from a wide range of artists, from Daft Punk to Dua Lipa, but some of our biggest creative surges come from seeing live performances. There’s something about the energy of a festival or gig that sparks new ideas, often conceptualising new music on the drive home.
You recently supported Groove Armada at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens—a massive milestone! What was that experience like?
Where do we even begin?? This gig was an absolute dream come true. We’ve been huge fans of Groove Armada for so long, not just for their music, but for everything they’ve done to build the profile and community in the live-electronic music scene. Sharing a stage with them was a true pinch-me moment.
Experiencing a show of that scale firsthand was incredible, from seeing how everything comes together to witnessing the massive teams working behind the scenes to make it happen. As a band, we had the time of our lives, and getting a glimpse of what it’s like to be a big-time artist has only fuelled our passion even more. We’re more motivated than ever to keep creating, pushing forward, and making music our life.
With a busy live schedule ahead, including shows with Mickey Kojack and Northeast Party House, what excites you most about performing ‘Highlight Of My Week’ live?
What I love about singing ‘Highlight of My Week’ live is that I can fully immerse myself in that present moment, knowing that without a doubt, that moment is the highlight of my week. It’s also a nice moment in the set where we get to slow things down and take stock, when the rest of the set is quite high-energy.
In the live circuit, you’ve also built a name for yourselves as curators through your live-electronic series, Club Miramar. How has that shaped your approach to music and community?
Club Miramar is all about bringing together the Australian electronic music scene at a grassroots level, with community at the heart of everything we do. We’re always thinking about how we can connect with fellow artists, whether it’s through studio sessions, playing live shows together, or simply spending time together to exchange experiences and learnings.
Club Miramar represents our commitment to building a physical space that nurtures a thriving electronic community. It’s been an incredible outlet for our creativity and has allowed us to connect, grow, and contribute to something bigger.
How does your background growing up in regional towns influence the music you make today?
Growing up in various regional towns along the east coast of Australia has played a major role in shaping our drive to create community through music. Living in these areas highlighted the scarcity of live electronic music, with indie rock dominating Australia’s music scene. This gap has fuelled our mission to expand and cultivate the electronic scene, not just in cities beyond Sydney, but also across the regional areas in between.
