A Quick Chat with ICONYX

Your new, debut album ‘Blak On Trak’ is out in the world today. Can you tell us a bit about what inspired the album and how you made it?
Inspiration comes from all different places. I've been working on these songs for a long time now, so younger me perhaps thought about things differently to how I do now – even so, it's all parts of me, my experiences, my culture, me working life out, sharing my perspective. I love every part of making music – getting ideas down, playing around with them until they sound like something great. Working with so many talented and wonderful people to get it to what you hear on the album.

Tell us about your album launch show tonight in Perth? Can people still get tickets?
Yes, the album launch is tonight at The Night Owl in Perth, as part of the Boss Arts Creative Showcase. Heaps of my friends are involved and are performing too. I really love these guys, and I'm so happy to have them with me tonight. It's sold out!

You recently supported Emily Wurramara at her show for Perth Festival. Can you tell us a bit about what that experience was like?
Perth Festival was amazing. Something different from any other gig I've done. The crowd were so fun! I was honoured to open for Emily, and it was really cool to meet her and then hear her perform.

How did your journey into music start?
I'm told I was always singing and dancing. When I was 4 or 5 my aunty played a game with an octave of bells that showed I have perfect pitch, and my cousin started teaching me piano soon after. At school I was always the first to offer to perform. I just loved it! It just kept growing from there, and when I met Aunty Charley from Boss Arts Creative when I was 9, we started writing, producing, recording my songs. So even though I am young, it's really been a work in progress my whole life.

What does the future look like for the ICONYX music project? Are there any big plans?
I'm already working on new song ideas, but for right now I'm just going to see what Blak On Trak leads to. I'd love to be able to share it with everyone, and I hope it means something.

Who would be your dream artist to collaborate with on a song?
Oh, that's impossible to choose! I love so many artists and all kinds of music. I do really love Baker Boy. It would be so cool to work with him.
