A Quick Chat with Down And Out

Congratulations on the single 'Lost [In Exposure]'. What are the plans to celebrate the release?

We’re gonna get absolutely fucking [redacted], probably get some [redacted], have ourselves a little bit of a [redacted], [redacted] some [redacted] and then spend two weeks [redacted].

Can you tell us a bit about the story behind the track?

The song is about the anxiety I feel about the possibility that a career in music will never happen for me. It’s something we’ve worked hard at for a long time and things seem to be going well but I think we all struggle with doubt about whether we’re any good or if Down And Out is going to really happen. But all we can really do is keep trying to put out great quality music and hope that it resonates with people!

How did you all meet and form Down And Out?

Well Luke and Alec are brothers so that one explains itself (I can clarify if anybody needs). Brad went to primary school with Luke and Alec. Around 2019 Luke put a pop/punk demo out into the Adelaide scene and it was received well, so Brad and Alec decided to jump on board to make it a proper band. Henry and Blake got in contact saying they heard potential in the songs and here we are!

The single is featuring Emmy Mack from RedHook and Potter from Stand Atlantic! Can you tell us about the collaboration between them on the single?

It was of course so sick to be able to get features from members of two of our favourite bands! It wasn’t something we thought was actually possible at the time, to be honest. We knew we wanted some features, and our producer also works with Stand Atlantic and RedHook so he contacted Potter and we contacted Emmy and it all sort of just came together really quickly and easily. In a way we still feel like a rinky dink bunch of idiots from Adelaide, so this helps us to feel like more of a legitimate band, which is nice!

How was the recording process in studio for the track?

Pretty smooth, to be honest! We went in with a pretty fleshed out song already, it didn’t change much other than the break beats and the guitar solo. Each song usually takes about two full days to bring together and track and this one was no exception.

What can fans expect to see next from Down And Out?

Look, I don’t wanna toot our own horn too much but our next single after Lost [In Exposure] is something that the slightly older scene kids are gonna be interested in, for sure. Like I was saying earlier about wanting to push the envelope and the boundaries, we went pretty hard with that with the next song. I don’t wanna give too much away so I’ll leave it at that but the next single is something I am VERY excited for people to hear.
