A Quick Chat with East Capri

Tell us about your recent release CLEANOUT, what was the production process like?

In terms of how the song started, it was written a lot differently from every other song we’ve released. The song took form from 2 short song ideas Jackson created a while ago which was a tribals style rap beat as the intro and the heavy riff-age music following soon after. From then on, the process flowed pretty smoothly as the aggressive feel lead into its own concept. We keep all the writing in-house with all of the recording and producing done by Jackson then co-writing with Eden on the vocals while the mixing and mastering were done by Lance Prenc. It was definitely a fun experience and really opened our eyes to new ideas when writing new music.

What is CLEANOUT about?

CLEANOUT is about cutting out all the people trying to inject themselves back into your life after seeing that you are doing well for yourself. We experienced a bit of this ourselves through messages and DMs from people trying to join the band or suddenly wanting to be involved in our lives after not hearing from them in years, so we all decided that was a very fitting concept for the song.

Could you tell us a little bit about the video? What was the inspo behind it?

We’re all gamers and into action movies and anime so we decided to go as big with the visuals as we did with the song. Most of the time, all we see are just band performance music videos, and thought it would be refreshing to have each member have their own acting scenes so what better way to have us all kidnapped and tortured in different ways! The torturers needed to look cynical, so we chose to have creepy anime-inspired faceless agents as villains, and also being inspired by cyberpunk we chose a breakout/getaway fight scene with cyber-inspired ninjas. Then we decided to tie the story back to the lady that was in our previous music video (Emily Sands) where we covered Positions by Ariana Grande, and she killed it! We couldn’t have pulled this off without Colin from Ten Of Swords who filmed and produced the video and we’re so happy with how it turned out!

Who are you influenced by?

We’re influenced by many bands and artists but with reference to CLEANOUT we would say I Prevail and Falling In Reverse really know how to fuse rap and hip-hop into the metal and hardcore genre but for the more intense and harsher yelling rap vocals we had a lot of inspiration from the delivery of vocals performed in Fever 333.

Who would be your dream collaboration - any genre?

We actually just spoke about this not too long ago! It would mostly depend on the type of song we wrote would depend on who we would choose but for this one in particular, we all love and know that emo music is really making a huge comeback, and being an Australian band we’d love to do heavy rock/pop punk/emo/hardcore song with the Veronicas! We just know that would slam! We also love bands like Chase Atlantic, Bring Me The Horizon, The 1975, and Falling In Reverse would be incredible to do any sort of collaboration with them.

If you could do a soundtrack to any film, what would it be and why?

That is an amazing question! We love the more serious Batman films with the dark and dreadful aesthetics so writing a song that felt atmospheric, hard-hitting, and theatrical would be incredible. The Matrix and Underworld movies would also be so amazing to write soundtracks too as well.

Who are some Australian alt-rock artists worth keeping an eye on this year?

There are a bunch of bands in Australia that are getting us super excited lately! The first one that comes to mind would be Windwaker. They released an amazing single with their new singer and can’t wait to see where they’re going next! Days Like These are another band doing new and refreshing stuff that we haven’t seen anyone else do bringing this upbeat and colourful emo vibe which we think is cool. Also, we’ve really been loving Make Them Suffer’s new material, they’ve been releasing banger after banger!

What do you have coming up?

At this stage, we don’t have shows locked in yet but we’re focussing a lot of time to make our live performances as entertaining as possible. We’re also working very hard on our next releases and can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve been working on! Expect some next-level visuals on our next single!
