A QUICK CHAT WITH GOODFRND

Who are your influences?

My biggest influence has to be The 1975. I remember watching them play 10 years ago at the Hordern Pavillion in Sydney and I was just blown away by their sound and performance. Funny thing is, at the time I wanted to make hardcore punk music. But now, they are still my biggest inspiration musically alongside Jeremy Zucker’s songwriting and dreamy sound.

What is your dream collaboration?

A song-writing collaboration with Jeremy Zucker would be incredible. I love the way he can be so direct lyrically and still give you emotional leverage in his sound. Also, Doja Cat, I fucking love Doja Cat.

Tell us about "I feel in love" what does it mean to you and where did it come from?

Being in love is the best feeling in the world. I fell in love and I wrote a song about it; how I got there, how I stayed in that feeling. The honeymoon feeling of chasing love is so exciting and I think this song captures that. Love doesn’t always last forever but you always remember that feeling.

I wrote I feel in love in my bedroom about 3 years ago, trying to learn some basic guitar chords. I accidentally sang the melody to the hook and surprised myself because I'd never used my head voice before. I’m so glad I stuck with it because this song, I believe, has shaped me as an artist and has had a major contribution to my confidence and development. I wouldn’t be where I am today without this song.

What do you think your biggest weakness is?

I overthink everything, especially around music. I can have a really good level of a song, ready to go, sent out, all ticks in place and then it gets to the end and I start thinking of all these other elements I should have added and whether it's good enough. It can be frustrating, but it also pushes me to keep improving. I also tend to get pretty anxious about things, like when I sent my friend 5 messages about his engagement while he

was overseas and then forgot to say it in person when he came back and had a mini meltdown. But he just laughed it off.

What are your plans for 2023?

My plan is to release some really good songs. I have a bank of tracks that I want to get out there and share with everyone. I also hope to play some live shows and take the right opportunities that come my way. I never plan too far ahead because things always change, but I’m really excited for this year. Hopefully, you'll catch me at a show soon.
