A Quick Chat With Gypsy Road

Melbourne’s Mid-West emo/ post-punk outfit Gypsy Road have dropped their new single ‘The 7 Stages Of Grief. This fiery, angsty number explores intense emotions from shock and denial to acceptance and hope. From smashing anthemic choruses to pensive verse, ‘The 7 Stages Of Grief’ is a cathartic meltdown. We caught up with the band to find out more about the track.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

This track means a lot to me personally. This song is about mourning a breakup and the feeling of that person being your life is now gone forever and having to cope with that. This song is that nostalgic feeling you get when you reminisce about the “good times”.

Who are some of your influences and why?

Some of our influences are bands like American Football, Two Knights, TTNG, The Hotelier and Luca Brasi. We have always loved that Midwest Emo sound and we are a sucker for passionately lyric driven songs and twinkly guitar riffs.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through too recording?

Normally I will make a demo on my acoustic guitar and bring it to my studio where I'll make a refined version and send it to James to put the drums over. Our songs come together really naturally and James and I have always had very similar writing styles, I guess one thing about the creative process is that I am often writing when I'm feeling quite vulnerable so I think with our songs come with a lot of waves of different emotions.

What do you think makes a great song?

Personally I think what makes a good song is originality and authenticity. I love when bands really craft their own style and message and you can hear it in the music. I love strong lyrics and strong messages. I always find myself trying to figure out the meaning of songs.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

I would love to work with Lil Narnia or Wil Wagner. They are both incredible songwriters and with HUGE voices.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

I think that writing music is my most creative outlet that I have, I think it's always been something I've clinged onto creativity since I was little. I love to record music just as much I like to make it and I also enjoy playing video games and skateboard (poorly)

Who are some local bands we should check out?

definitely checkout Lamphead, Turn South and Who Threw That. They are some really sick emo bands!!!

Winter or summer and why?

Definitely winter. I love to rug up and wear jumpers. The hot weather sucks for working asphalt and I get overheated and lethargic so easily.

What else do you have planned for 2024?

We have an album called “Letters To A Friend, From Interstate” coming out in May and we are hoping to play quite a few shows off It and even maybe do a tour later in the year. Hopefully we can play with bigger supports too!!
