A Quick Chat With POLLY

Rekindling lust and desire, Melbournes electro-pop artist POLLY, has released a pulsating new single ‘We’re not really strangers’. Just her second release to date after debuting in August last year, POLLY is quickly showing that she has an innate ability to craft powerful technicoloured electro and dream pop. ‘We’re not really strangers’ bubbles with cool, sensual energy and is glued together with a hypnotic drum and bass combo. We caught up with POLLY to find out more about the track, her influences and more.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

I’m really proud of this track and really excited to have it out in the world. Writing this song helped me make sense of a confusing situation and made it all feel a bit lighter. I think any artist really just wants their music to be related to and for people to feel connected to the song in whatever capacity

Who are some of your influences and why?

I would say The Police, Fleetwood Mac and Kate Bush had a huge influence on me growing up. I think my love for 80’s music will always influence my sound. More present day, I would say profiles like Fletcher, BANKS and Tove Lo have helped me solidify my branding and my overall direction as an artist.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

It changes depending on what season of life I’m in but generally I’ll have an experience, conversation etc that I need to process - so I’ll sit down at my piano and just see what comes out. I guess I flesh stuff out from there. Some make it to the studio and others will forever stay in my voice memos app

What do you think makes a great song?

Sonically, I’m obsessed with anything that has a hard hitting bass or synth but I think you can really tell when a song has actual emotion behind it. That’s what really differentiates a song for me.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Would have to be Flume. I think he’s been so monumental in the Australian music landscape and it would be so fun to create something alongside such a pioneer of the electronic genre

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

I’ve dabbled in pottery in the past which was lots of fun! But I’d say my other outlets are yoga and reading

Who are some local bands we should check out?

I’m loving Blusher at the moment. I’m a sucker for a girl band

Winter or summer and why?

I honestly love both hmm

Winter because of the cosy, fireplace and cup of tea vibes and summer because of the longer days and beach sessions - too hard to pick between them!

What else do you have planned for 2024?

You’ll just have to wait and see!
