A QUICK CHAT WITH LEWW

Congratulations on the release of ‘Show Ya’! Where did you draw your inspiration from for this one?

I really wanted to make this track a feel-good song that really fires you up and motivates you for whatever you want to achieve when you listen to it.

When I was writing the lyrics, I was thinking about the people that might still be my friends and support me no matter what compared to those who might only want to know me if I was famous. Interesting for me there are those who think I can do it and others who are nice but may not believe it. From that came the inspiration for the track, through pushing ahead and working hard I will “Show Ya”.

How would you describe your music to someone that has never listened to it before?

My music is honest, raw and I try to keep it as interesting as possible usually centred around real instruments rather than digital instruments but mixed with some creative electronic production.

It’s a bit of tough question because some of my songs are really stripped back and more of an acoustic style compared to my recent style which is more complex and interesting in sounds and layers. At the moment I am working to bring some more traditional rock band elements (big guitars, real drums and great riffs) combined with R&B, Hip Hop Rap Trap style.

My music will almost always include a strong vocal melody from me and one primary instrument.

Who are your biggest influences in music?

At the moment I’m really vibing Machine Gun Kelly’s pop-rock stuff that he has been putting out recently. I’m finding that influence is working its way into my own song writing but of course, thinking about how I keep my own flavour and style on it.

I do also find myself very often going back and listening to Juice WRLD as the way he puts sentences and melodies together is just so good.

Finally, I do often enjoy putting on a great full band rock track with classic drums, bass, guitars, keys and vocals and learning more about how that music was written and recorded. Got to be inspired by bands that kept going through the 70’s, 80s and 90s releasing album after album with lifelong fans.

Do you have anything unique about your song writing process?

I don’t think anything is particularly unique. I don’t really have any rituals or patterns to when and how I write music.

Whilst guitar is my primary instrument, I tend to find myself now going to the piano keyboard and working through a few chord progressions. 90% of my songs will start with the music first and then I will freestyle some lyrics. Very occasionally I might add a lyric hook that I will work from.

When I play different chords, song themes and ideas will tend to pop into my head and then I will work on refining the lyric story. This could range from something that happened that day, something on the news or something or someone from a past event.

Again, I don’t think its especially unique but my songs grow from a small music or lyric idea and then I will keep working on the production to add emotion and interest to that – typically over a standard pop hook verse chorus style. I will basically use my ear in the studio to add song elements and see if it needs more or less. Sometimes I need to listen to it a few times to then work with the producer to change things around a bit.

I typically have most of the ideas of the song done (in my head) in a day.

What would you love to achieve in the next 5 years in your music career?

For now, I am just really focussed on writing and releasing new original songs and building up a fan base and support for my music. With so many great artists and songs out there starting to lock in and be recognised for my own style which I am feeling is about a nice clean vocal and instrument together with a strong rock / pop / bass and beats backing.

Hopefully that then also opens up to collaboration opportunities with other Australian and international music artists.

When our current COVID world allows, I also look forward to booking out some great venues with a great catalogue of original songs for a live touring leww show – and hopefully supported by a few million monthly song streams!
