A QUICK CHAT WITH MAVER

'Close Enough' is a bop! What was the inspiration behind it?

Thank you so much! This song came about when I was in lockdown and had a massive surge in creativity. I wrote an idea and sent it to a friend of mine over zoom, and we bounced versions back and forth until we came up with the basis for the track. The inspiration behind it was the idea surrounding the feeling of how a person can be your emotional support system. Whenever you are with them, they make you feel unstoppable. 'Close Enough' was also inspired by the feeling of how you would do anything for this person, even putting yourself in harm's way. At the same time, this other person being there for you to help you on your journey give you that last push you need to achieve your goals.

What is the creative process for you?

Manipulating sounds is one of my favourite things to do when making music, which generally drives most of my creative process. Being able to make a sound no one has heard before through experimentation is an incredible feeling and something that inspires me to make more. I like to try and throw sounds through extreme situations like an intense distortion or delay or stretch out the time a bunch to see if I can make a sound even more interesting than it may already be.

Collaboration is also significant for me when crafting a song, and working with other like-minded people is a huge plus. When making a track, I generally try to develop a few iterations of one idea and see which idea strikes a chord with another artist or vocalist.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

It'd have to be Jimi Hendrix (if he was still alive). His creative process and general approach to music was awe-inspiring, and being able to be in a room with him and engage with his creative process would be absolutely priceless. His music really got me into playing music in the first place, and it would be an absolute honour to be able to work with him.

When you aren't writing music, what are you doing?

When I'm not writing music, I love spending time with my friends and family, completing uni assignments, trying to find fun things to do and surfing when I can. Surfing is a massive passion of mine and is incredibly addictive as soon as you get into it. It's something where I can clear my mind and is generally the easiest way to reset my brain if I'm feeling overwhelmed. If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend it.

What else do you have planned for the year?

I've got plans to share some music with some fantastic people and do my best to try and make people dance! I would love to try and meet some more people and other musicians and collaborate as much as possible.
