A Quick Chat with Verticoli

Congratulations on the new single! How did the creative process happen with 'Sailor', from writing to recording?

'Sailor' started as a quick demo that came about in probably 45 minutes. Otherwise destined to sit in the folder of unused demos, our producer Jon Grace decided it was a tasty little morsel he'd like to get to work on. He convinced us that it would make for a good change of pace for the album, and we workshopped it into what it became. We're very happy with it and thankful for Jon's guidance.

It has been nearly ten years since Verticoli came onto the scene, releasing your debut EP. How would you say your sound developed from your releases over the years?

When we started the band, we had a lot to prove. We tried to make songs harmonically and technically complex, sometimes to the song's detriment. We have very much come to terms with who we are as musicians these days and always try to service the song first and foremost. Much to the surprise of my former 15-year-old self, I only play solos in about half of songs now. See one of our first songs, 'Uneasy' for reference: it has a guitar, bass and drum solo!

Absolutely love the 'Sailor' music video, what was the process like creating that video?

It was an amazing process. Dane Meale of Creative Grit, who filmed the video, is a very talented guy and an absolute pleasure to work with. We came to him with the basic idea of the band, a dinghy, some sand dunes and a body of water, and he did the rest. We are thrilled with how it turned out, particularly as it showcases the beauty of Tasmania. Credit to our mate Jack Pitt, Principal Nautical Consultant.

When not working on music, what are some things you like to do with your time as a band?

When we were last on tour together, Jez and I went to the movies together and had a really lovely lunch. The next day we all went out for breakfast and went for a delightful walk. Just enjoy each other's company really.

Tell us about any upcoming live shows and what fans can expect in the set?

We've got a show this Friday night at Penny's Bandroom in Melbourne, then we're playing in Hobart at Hobart Brewing Co. on Friday night and at The Irish in Launceston on Saturday. At the end of the year will be doing the album tour. Punters can expect a great time, a bit of banter, but above all very energetic live show, with three blokes who just love to thrash it out, especially with some new songs in the set!

What are your plans for 2023?

We are already working on the new music, but we really just want to keep playing shows and service our upcoming album, 'The Echo', the best we can. Once we milk it for all it's worth, it'll be back to the studio.
