A Quick Chat with Mirror Mirror

Mirror Mirror hailing from the vibrant Gold Coast music scene are bringing the funk and soul with their new track ‘When You Find The Time’. With a sound that throws back to an era of glamour and legends of the likes of Stevie Wonder, ’When You Find The Time’ is a stunning example of Mirror Mirror’s signature sound. Featuring an infectious groove, smooth melodies and that 70s-inspired sparkle, Mirror Mirror proves to be an act to watch out for. We caught up with the mind behind it all, Ondre Davis, to find out more about the track, his influences and more

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

I hope people can absorb the fun and freedom I had whilst writing and recording this song. It came about at a really pivotal time and I knew the idea felt special when writing it. When I listen back to this track, it feels like a little reminder of a lesson learnt, and I love that!

Who are some of your influences and why?

A lot of my influences are artists from the mid to late 70’s and early 80’s. Artists such as Bobby Caldwell, Michael Franks, Ned Doheny etc. The whole era of which these artists created in are an inspiration for me - the song writing styles/themes, the recording techniques, the musical instruments, the steeze! For this track however, I also drew inspiration from a few newer artists - Tame Impala, I Know Leopard, Parcels. I felt these influences gave me a little more freedom with the production and song writing aspects, which I came to enjoy.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

For the most of my music, the creative process begins at the piano. As this isn’t my primary instrument, I feel it gives me a little more freedom to create something that feels new and exciting. After this, if all is going well, I work on a melody and attempt to start writing some lyrics! If the lyric writing is getting in the way, I begin layering with the other instruments that are calling out to be used - I love this part! This whole process usually takes place in my studio, so when writing, I will usually start recording at the same time.

What do you think makes a great song?

A good groove!

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Hmmm, any of my influences above, or Michael Jackson. It just sounds like a good time! They all created feel good music, and I wish there was more of it around today.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

When I’m not working on my own music I run my own studio and gig to help others with their music. It feels so nice to be able to put creative energy into helping friends!

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Luja Murfi, Miss Lucy, The Oogars

What else do you have planned for 2023?

Mirror Mirror’s first live show! We’ll be hosting our first show at an old town hall with other local acts, and of course a big disco ball. Otherwise, some new music!
