A Quick Chat with Natalie Jane

You’re touring Australia for the very first time in January, what are you most looking forward to?
I’ve never been to Australia before so I’m extremely excited to explore the cities I’ll be playing. I might go to the zoo if we have time- I think that’s the priority on my day off. But I think it’s incredible to have fans on the opposite side of the world. I'm just so excited to meet them.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

I think Billie Eilish is currently my biggest musical influence. She does whatever she wants in her songs no matter what the norms are and stays true to herself which I admire. It’s hard to do that when a million different people give their opinions on what you should do, so I have a lot of respect for her for that.

You recently released your EP Sick To My Stomach, can you tell us what this release means to you?
The release is so incredibly special to me. It’s a collection of songs that make me feel sick to my stomach. Whether you feel anxiety or nerves or if you’re in love and you feel butterflies, you can feel it your stomach. That’s what the EP is all about. I think this project was almost a way for me to relieve that anxiety and release it in a sort of therapeutic way.

What’s your favourite thing about performing live?

My favourite thing about performing live is seeing everybody’s faces. Everything I do is online and I only see numbers and usernames on a screen, so when I’m in person in a venue and I see real people, it’s awesome. I feel overwhelmed and so thankful for the fact that they go out of their way to spend their evenings with me.

What do you find yourself doing when you’re not making music?

When I’m not working on music I’m painting! There was actually a point in time where I wanted to pursue visual arts rather than becoming a performing artist. But now I try to incorporate painting into what I do today. I paint tour posters which I sell copies of on the road and I’ll sign and number them.

What’s next for Natalie Jane? Is there some new music on the horizon?

There is definitely more music coming. I can’t say exactly what yet but I’m really dialing in on a specific sound right now and focusing on a collection of music rather than individual songs.
