A Quick Chat With Off Judy

Byron’s nonchalant and carefree garage surf rock trio, Off Judy, have just released their new anthem, ‘Under The Weather’ and accompanying music video. Under The Weather' is an electrifying recent release that exemplifies Off Judy's unique blend of vibrant punk and invigorating surf-inspired anthems. The track seamlessly merges catchy tunes with a spirited vibe, resulting in a highly memorable experience. It skillfully showcases Off Judy's punk origins, incorporating a raw and energetic rock base that brims with sing-along choruses. By striking a perfect balance between an accessible indie rock groove and a powerful punk-driven sound, they have truly mastered their musical style. We caught up with the band to chat about influence, the key to a good song and got the tip on some awesome aussie bands.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

It’s essentially about being there for your mates when they need you and helping each other through the shit times. That’s our message behind it but we’re big fans of putting your own meaning to a song and taking away what you want from it, so if you get something else from it, that’s sick and roll with it!

Who are some of your influences and why?

There are so many good bands around at the moment, both in Australia and abroad. Whatever we’re listening to at the time influences the songs we write, but there are some that stick with us.

Black lips - they have this cool low-fi punk sound and their lyrics are always on point .

Mischief brew - They might be my favourite band. They had the folk punk sound down packed, and their songs always tell stories you get lost in. The lead singer Erick Petersen ended up taking his own life which is really sad but he wrote so many amazing songs while they were around.

The Pretty Littles - They’ve gotta be one of the most underrated bands in Australia. Super raw and honest. Wish we could write songs like them haha

The Ramones

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?
Finn- I just come to rehearsal with a riff and a bit of an idea and we just try some things til we’re happy with it.

Axl - Then we’ll go record a demo and from there it usually changes a bunch until we go into the studio.

What do you think makes a great song?

Every band is different and makes different music. When a band's strengths all come together in a song, thats when the sound really comes through, and the best songs come out. When a song really sounds like it represents what that band is, I think that’s when you know it's good.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Johnny Cash - Started listening to him when the ‘Walk the line’ movie came out and never looked back. He tapped into so many different genres of music at once and made his own rules. He was a G. Doing a collab would be dreamy. Were he alive lol

Snoops not answering our calls

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

Coffee and puzzzles

Who are some local bands we should check out?
Looch - We played a show with them a couple of months ago they’re from Adelaide and blew our minds when they played. Go check em.

Cupid and the Stupids - They’re our friends from here. There’s a bunch of them in the band. They all dress up and Jalessa tap dances. They’re always having a goody.

Winter or summer, and why?

We’re in Byron, so would have to say winter. Summer here is too hot and hectic.
