A Quick Chat With prchr.

Introducing prchr., a force to be reckoned with in the world of unapologetic rock. With his dual single 'GHOST / CHICAGO' otu now, prchr. is captivating young rock enthusiasts with his raw energy and genre-blending sound, combining alternative, garage, and hard rock elements. 'GHOST' and 'CHICAGO,' serve as anthems of escapism, exploring themes of disappointment, isolation, and introspection while enveloped in walls of fuzz and infectious hooks. We caught up with prchr. to find out more.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

I feel like GHOST, in a way, is a real belter of an introduction track to who I am and how I feel about myself. Like it’s a proper extension of how I sound, what I sing about, etc. People can take away that this song is about me but it’s for them. The music is for them. It’s for when they need it most just like it’s for when I need it. GHOST could be a part of them if they wanted it to be.

Who are some of your influences and why?

Man, a lot of artists nowadays have a real effect on me. Even the ones that are in a separate genre. I’m always gonna have a soft spot for Nothing But Thieves, QOTSA, Highly Suspect, Royal Blood for getting me into the music I play today but I always value the likes of The Weeknd or Badflower and Post Malone for how they write a song and sing/perform it. I’m actually also starting to listen to more and more underground, local artists. I’m digging a few gaze/alt bands coming out of the western side of America at the moment. The ones with their unique sound and writing style that pulls me in easily.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

It kind of alternates a bit. Sometimes the lyrics come first and then other days a riff or a song idea come first instead. It really comes down to what works and what doesn’t work for me and how I can put the pen to paper. I try and piece it all together in these sh**ty little demos on my computer which I tend to use to record over when I jump in the studio. Y’know so I get like a good idea of what I want out of it and so I use my studio time wisely.

What do you think makes a great song?

Would it surprise you if I said the melody or hook? Yeah I don’t mind a fantastic riff that rips the eyelids from my flesh but what really pulls me in more and more into a song is the way that a song is sung or written or performed or makes me feel as a whole. I guess it all depends on the song actually sounding good and ending up sticking in my head and makes me want to come back to listen to it again.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

I genuinely wouldn’t mind a day sesh with cleopatrick or the Dubé brothers from Zig Mentality. Y’know I feel real strong about some of the sounds and noises we could come up with in a day. I’ve actually worked with Jig Dubé before on the mixing and mastering of my last EP which is why it sounds so huge. It’d be great to meet up one day and just have a jam and see what comes out of it. Also Joshua Homme from QOTSA or Jack from the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets would be interesting. Presenting them with a song or two and getting their opinions on how we could change it up and how we could record it.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

I do enjoy making short funny videos for myself or focus on the design of how I want some of the promotion for prchr. to be. Just little side things that help me build my skills every now and then. If not, I’ll be cooking random sh*t in the kitchen. I feel like Brownies or Bacon Fritters are starting to become my specialty at the moment.

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Some of the bands that I couldn’t recommend enough are Hot Reno, deepsix, Eyesite, The Vultures, Loftriot, Miily and Downward. All of these artists create such massive sounding tunes with some of the best songwriting ever and I’m all for it!

Winter or summer and why?

I always feel like a fish out of water in summer. I want to wear long clothes for life. Y’know jeans and a sweater or a coat. Plus I love rain or a cloudy day with a little bit of wind. I’ve done a lot of heavy lifting jobs in the outdoors to try and back the music a bit and it’s absolute AGONY during Summer. I can’t stand it. I hate the heat. I hate it so much that I plan on buying a little floor fan for me when I play onstage. I opened for The Smith Street Band in March and Will Wagner’s floor fan was literally shooting cold air into my face from the air con in the venue. It was the best thing ever.

What else do you have planned for 2023?

One more song before the end of the year. It’s a big one. Other than that, who knows? I might be popping up every now and then playing bigger shows. Take it one step at a time and see where it leads. Might try some interstate shows and then jumping back into the studio for more. Try and build myself up more and more as an artist and a name. Also at the moment, my plan is to just survive
