A QUICK CHAT WITH PAINT

What was the inspiration behind your latest track ‘Bam’?

Anya: The inspo behind Bam came from us watching a documentary that came out about Bam Margera (the skater/jackass guy) and how he had been affected by fame and the perils of addiction.

Tom: We were listening to heaps of Blink and Sum 41 at the time we wrote it and I think that might have weasled its way in. It’s a bit of an oddball song for Paint, hence why it’s not part of any bigger body of songs.

How did you all meet and get to making music together?

Anya: Tom (bass) and I met while working at a surf store about 5 years ago and instantly bonded over music. Tom went to America about a year later to do exchange and we agreed that when he got back we’d start a band, which is what we did. Liam (lead guitar) and Tom were friends from high school and a year or so into the band we met Jack (drums) because he was including us on a compilation that his record label “Another Rat” was putting out.

What’s your favourite show you’ve played so far?

Anya: We’ve played a few shows that come close, but I would say our favourite was either our EP launch with Blue Honey or when we had the opportunity to open for Body Type a few months ago.

Tom: The EP launch was sick and probably the most fun set we’ve done. Liam broke his finger before the Body Type one so we had our friend Reid on guitar playing along and doing the parts Liam couldn’t do with his finger cast which was pretty funny. Body Type rule!

Liam: Playing with Hockey Dad was really fun!

What TV shows are you bingeing at the moment?

Anya: The Bear

Liam: Nathan for You

Tom: Curb your Enthusiasm

Jack: I’ve been watching this show on the history of Wales

What was the first concert you ever went to?

Anya: Chris Cornell from Soundgarden

Liam: Skegss

Tom: The Chats on their first tour of WA in 2018

Jack: I think it was a Queen cover band

What have been your favourite album releases from this year so far?

Anya: I think we can all collectively say the new Feeble Little Horse album “Girl With Fish”, the new Slow Pulp album “Yard” and the Wednesday album “Rat Saw God.”

Tom: Yeah the ones Anya said were my top 3. I also loved “3D Country” by Geese and “Exploited” by Enjoy.

Liam: Same as Tom and Anya but also “Guts” by Olivia Rodrigo and “Space Heavy” by King Krule

Jack: I’ve been listening to the new Billiam album “Corner Tactics”

If you could share the stage with any musician (alive or dead) who would it be?

Anya: Veruca Salt or Sinead O’Connor

Liam: Billy Corgan

Tom: Butthole Surfers

Jack: The Freddie Mercury impersonator from that Queen cover band

What’s in store for the rest of 2023?

Anya: The rest of 2023 is going to consist of playing The Bird 3 weeks in a row to close out the year and mainly working on the next EP (which is coming together slowly) plus a few little creative endeavours here and there.

Tom: We’re gonna go watch Alvvays next week too.
