A Quick Chat with Rachael Coltrona

Congrats on the release of ‘Everybody’s Doing It’ can you tell us a bit more about how the song came about and the meaning behind it?

Thank you! I really love this track and how it came about. Everybody’s Doing It was born from a writing session in Sydney, inspired by a lifestyle and fitness challenge I was taking on at the time—which included cutting out all caffeine and alcohol. While other people in my life and society embraced those habits, and other more illicit ones, I realised I didn’t need to follow what everybody else was doing to feel good. It’s about owning who you are, no matter what everyone else is doing. From that conversation, we knew we needed an upbeat song to reflect the uplifting message to just be yourself. Luckily, our producer Phil Anquetil easily weaved in an electrifying beat to reflect that, and all the writing and recording were done in just one day!

For people who might be discovering you for the first time, how would you describe your music and what you’re all about as an artist?

I would say my sound is a bit of everything, just like me. I have a background in classical, musical theatre, and contemporary pop music, so my music reflects that. I’m quite a happy and bubbly person, so Everybody’s Doing It really reflects the energy and mindset I have—that I’m not heavily influenced by what’s ‘in’ or trending if it’s not what I’m authentically about. I want people to come on the journey of life with me, make the most of it, and try to see the positives even when going through something hard.

What do you think makes a great song?

I think a great song has that special ability to hit you right in the feels but in a way that you can't stop playing it. You know, those tracks that make you sing at the top of your lungs in the car and somehow you don’t even realise you've had it on repeat 50 times? The ones that give you chills or make your whole body want to dance. That’s what I strive for with every song I create. It's not just about me expressing myself—it’s about making something that others can truly connect with. A catchy, melodic chorus with simple, euphoric lyrics is always a winner, but when the lyrics speak to everyone on a deeper level, that's when the real magic happens.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

If I could collaborate with any artist, it would definitely be Julia Michaels or Griff. Their lyrics really speak to me, and the way they produce their music is something I deeply connect with. Both of them have this incredible ability to resonate with their audience through their songs, and that's something I really admire. I have so much respect for female artists who also take on the roles of producers and songwriters—they’re total inspirations to me. I’d love to create something that has that same emotional depth and connection but is also super catchy!

When you’re not making music, what might we find you doing?

My greatest love outside of creating music would be sitting down at the beach, watching the sunset while reading a good book. I find so much calm and inspiration at such a beautiful spot! I’m an avid reader and love a good murder mystery or rom-com book.

What are your plans for 2025?

For 2025, I've got some exciting things lined up! I’ll be dropping a different version of Everybody’s Doing It (you heard it here first!) and I can’t wait for you all to hear it, so keep your eyes peeled! I’ll also be heading back into the studio to record more singles, which I’m hoping to release soon. On top of that, I’m planning to put on my own solo show and perform live around Perth as a solo artist. Plus, I’ll be rocking it with my band and even doing concerts with a symphony orchestra! It’s going to be a crazy busy year, but I honestly couldn’t be more thrilled to do what I love.
