A Quick Chat with Saint Ergo

Can you tell us a bit about what your new track “Falling So Hard" is about?
So "Falling So Hard" is about falling in love with someone or some people you probably shouldn’t. It’s about how chemistry happens and can completely override good sense, but also acknowledges that this may be exactly what you wish for. This desire to be “dumb and in love.”

The video clip brings out the relationship dynamics of the song to the front, the “some people.” Monogamy is the default assumption in society and is often described in terms of “normal,” and somehow “normal” makes this the right and proper way. There can be both healthy and toxic relationships in all relationship dynamics.

I guess the secret message in the song is my own desire to be a bad girl in love. 😂

What are some of your influences when it comes to music and why?
I grew up in a Pentecostal Christian environment, and so I was exposed to a lot of artists like Keith Green, Charlie Peacock, and Amy Grant, to name just three. I guess my biggest influence as a songwriter would be Sam Phillips, who was known in CCM circles as Leslie Phillips. I love how there has been a journey of authentic discovery in her work to move beyond that early Christian narrative into something that is more explorative of human relationships. Musically, I have always been drawn to lushness, whether that has been in groove, harmony, or texture. I can’t really pin down a specific artist, but I find myself drawing as much from classical music and metal as I do from POP or RnB.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording to creating a music video?
In short, there is no “process.” It’s an ADHD-fueled game of hungry hungry hippos with my autistic side trying desperately to get me to remember to put on a skirt and brush my teeth.

What do you think makes a great song?
A great song is one you can find a piece of yourself in that you never knew existed.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Sam Phillips, hands down. She is my idea of the greatest songwriter currently living. I would be honored to do a co-write with her.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet do you have?
I love making polymer clay jewelry and making food for the people I love in my life.

Winter or summer and why?
Winter. It’s when you can hide away, experience a fresh life perspective, and not deal with people.

What else do you have planned for the year?
I really want to find a nice campervan, get on the road with my daughter, and do some shows around Australia.
