A QUICK CHAT WITH SOAP

You are one of the very talented young bands in Australia, when did you three get together and start SOAP?

SOAP started pretty early on when we were all in high school. At the time it was a bit of fun that we would have together, linking up on the weekends and jamming out. It wasn’t until later on after school, that we started to write some proper songs that we didn’t cringe at anymore and we began to take it a bit more seriously.

What have been some of the difficulties in the past 2 years being a band in Aus?

It’s definitely been interesting… I sometimes think of us as babies of the pandemic. We only started cutting our teeth properly and gaining some momentum a couple months before COVID hit. And from then on releasing music and putting on shows was a really up and down process. We always felt like there was something around the corner everytime we booked a headline show. Capacity would be halved the day of, people would have to sit down to watch, or the show would just be cancelled. It was really frustrating, when you knew people needed to see you live in a proper loud and sweaty concert to get the full vibe of what we are. The culture has definitely evolved, which isn’t a bad thing. There has been a lot of adapting for sure.

What are your goals for the remainder of the year and heading into a big 2023?

The start of 2022 found us taking our time for our next releases and focusing on the sound and presentation of the band. We are really proud of the progress we’ve made and really want to get it in peoples faces next. Slowly start doing the circuit and playing shows to hopefully expose ourselves to people whom might be out of our initial circle.

Sonically, the band seems to have taken snippets of some great bands, who are some of your biggest influences?

We’ve definitely taken inspiration from many of the early 2000’s guitar bands, i.e. Interpol, The Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age. And overtime we’ve begun and hope to continue melding that with our love of the UK’s electronic and band scene. Acts like, IDLES, Burial, Massive Attack, SORRY.

If you had to live off of one toasted sandwich and drink combo, what are we talking about here?

A question like this is definitely situational. Morning, we are talking about no thrills, cheese and tomato and a long black. Lunchtime onwards, a mediterranean style focaccia and a red wine sounds pretty good!

You have incredibly been given the opportunity to play with some great acts like Jaguar Jonze and Young Lions, who is on your radar to play alongside in the future?

Local heroes would definitely include Holy Holy, These New South Wales and Amyl and the Sniffers. On a more transatlantic scale, IDLES, Wolf Alice and Fontaines DC sit pretty high on the list.

If you could have three words to describe the direction and destination of SOAP what would it be?

Punchy, Angular, HUGE

Thanks Legends.
