A Quick Chat with The Sunday Estate

Congrats on the new single! What’s the story behind ‘Make It Right’?

Writing ‘Make it Right’ was a reflection in responsibility and control. It took a long time to realise that when dealing with my own problems or thoughts, I’d inadvertently be pushing those I love out of my life. ‘Make it Right’ is about that realisation, that your problems are your own - yes you can be upset, but hurting others while trying to heal yourself just creates a spiteful cycle where no one wins. It’s a bit of a ‘Working My Way Back to You’ kind of song.

What brought the five of you together to start playing and recording as The Sunday Estate?

We all just really wanted to be in a band for as long as we can remember. Conor met Sven at his retail job and Tom through his girlfriend. Finn and Conor go way back but he and Dave (who met Conor at uni) were recruited by reaching out online, and at the start Dave even said he wasn’t in but came back at next rehearsal.

At the start we most of us were playing instruments we weren’t used to – Sven was a piano player and learnt drums, Finn knew guitar but had never played bass, and Dave was a bass player who hadn’t played much guitar – funny how that happened - we were just keen to play together because we were all friends.

Can you tell us about your songwriting process as a band? Did you do anything differently with ‘Make It Right’?

We had written a big batch of songs after “When You Make It Home” and were finding they weren’t enough of a left turn from that EP. We were keen just keen to keep on writing and tried this more bright and poppy direction that you can hear on the new singles. There was a lot more collaboration the whole way through and we did some demo sessions with Nick Zaharias who was great.

Where have you been finding your inspiration lately?

Our pop picks: The Neighbourhood, Rosalia, Egoism, Muna, Westside Gunn

Not-pop picks: Alabaster Deplume, Nilufer Yanya, The Japanese House, Alvvays, Boards of Canada

You’ve been lighting up the local live music scene since your inception - what are some live show highlights from the year so far?

Playing with Yard Act and British India have been great. We’ve hit up heaps of support shows in NSW this year and it’s been great to play with and see so many amazing bands coming through. We’re super keen to go on another full Aus tour though, joining Stand Atlantic last year was so fun.
