A Quick Chat With TRIPSITTA

Melding classic psych-rock with contemporary indie producing, Brisbane-based outfit TRIPSITTA have unleashed their new single ‘Velvet Zen’ and will be hitting the East coast over the coming month. Following their 2020 debut, they've released a string of singles and shared stages with luminaries like Busby Marou and Hoodoo Gurus at local festivals. 'Velvet Zen' is a slow-burning psychedelic gem, erupting with a gripping guitar solo and commanding drums, led by Jack Williams' authoritative vocals. The track embarks on a transcendental journey through life's ebbs and flows, capturing moments of beauty with intricate guitar leads and harmonies. Its accompanying video chronicles a couple's pursuit of unity and inner peace. We caught up with Jack from the band to find out more.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

(Jack) It's based on a very emotional time in my life, I wasn't sure on which direction I would go. But through a transcendental experience I realised there was only one true answer that would lead me to where I wanted/needed to go. We really want people to be inspired by the track. To take away that in those moments of extreme emotional and mental anguish we find ourselves in front of a mirror, sometimes we see things we didn't want to see in ourselves, good and bad. But to understand ourselves is to understand how to grow to become who we want to be.

Who are some of your influences and why?

I would say it fluctuates alot depending on what I'm listening to at the time. So at the moment; Gang of Youth, The Beatles, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Ocean Alley, Lazy Eyes, GOAT and Radiohead. They have been making some pretty exciting pieces.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording? Usually I come up with a chord progression first then I can hear a melody come to me, I hum it out, and based on how it makes me feel ill write lyrics to match. Then I'll bring to the rest of the band we workshop the track, get it sounding show ready and give it a try at a performance and see how the audience reacts to it. If they seemed to be vibing with it, it's usually a great sign to go record it

What do you think makes a great song? If a song can make it to anyone's road trip playlist or any playlist for that matter. I'd say that's what makes it a great track.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why? Would 110% be David Lèaupepe from Gang of Youth. His lyrics are next level emotional storytelling. I've never connected so much to lyrics. I'm usually more of a melody lover but his lyrics are insane! Would love to collab

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have? Usually gardening I find it very grounding and extremely relaxing.

Who are some local bands we should check out? Would recommend keeping an eye on Bonsai Bay from Brisbane for fans of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.

Also just saw Seeing Violet in Brissy and they have a sick sound plus massive vocals.

Winter or summer and why?

As the fairest skinned guy in the band 100% Winter and can wear insanely colourful or trippy fits and not have to perish from sweat.

What else do you have planned for 2023?

We are heading South on Tour making stops in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra and coming back home at the end of the year for an end of Tour show, and some local festivals before heading back into the studio to record our debut album.
